Medical Director
Position Overview
The Medical Director (MD) is responsible for providing strong leadership for the hospital, managing and mentoring associate veterinarians, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining an environment of teamwork in which the highest quality veterinary medicine is delivered. The MD also serves as a staff veterinarian in addition to administrative and leadership duties. The MD holds shared responsibility for the financial health of the hospital and directs staff and overall management of practice operations.
Key Responsibilities
Maintaining a high quality of progressive veterinary care; overseeing medical standards and quality of care.
Setting policies relevant to the practice of medicine; recommending additions to hospital inventory and budgeting for new equipment.
Ensuring positive communication with clients and between veterinarians; proper transfer of patient care responsibilities.
Reviewing patient records for completeness and accuracy and using them to promote medical excellence.
Managing controlled drugs, reviewing and approving requests for alternatives.
Conducting regular doctor meetings; performing other duties as assigned.
Handling patient care problems, client complaints, and referral partner issues.
Managing veterinary, client, and board complaints and recommending resolutions.
Developing medical policies and ensuring compliance with the State Veterinary Medical Practice Act, OSHA, and AAHA standards.
Monitoring DVM performance and production; providing coaching when appropriate.
Serving as a mentor and role model for staff veterinarians.
Leading candidate interviews of potential DVMs.
Identifying new service opportunities; holding ownership for revenue and success of the practice.
Planning for upcoming operational challenges and temporary solutions.
Qualifications (Required)
DVM or VMD from an accredited college or university.
Current State Veterinary License.
DEA registration required.
3–5+ years of experience in a veterinary practice.
Strong diagnostic and clinical skills.
Excellent surgical and dental skills.
Ability to work well in a team‑oriented environment.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
Commitment to providing compassionate and high‑quality veterinary care.
Client communication skills, including rapport building and explanation of care.
Confidence and reassurance when dealing with stressed, ill, or painful pets.
Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling as needed.

Pay Range: $170,000 – $200,000 USD
