JOB SUMMARYA Mount Vernon Schools coach inspires student athletes by creating and nurturing an environment where all students belong and incorporates high expectations, rigor, good sportsmanship, team building, love of the sport and safety. Desired applicants have experience with and/or a commitment to the success with migrant, bilingual, and multilingual students. Mount Vernon Schools coaches kindle excitement and actively engage students in play.QUALIFICATIONSSuccessful head and/or varsity assistant coaching experience at high school or college levelExperience and commitment building a program that includes managing the JV and C Teams that build a consistent positive culture and skill set that supports the varsity programDemonstrated compassion to cultural, developmental, religious, and ethnic diversity of students and community and a passion for equity and inclusionDemonstrated ability to connect with students, staff and community members in a mutually respectful, supportive and accessible mannerDemonstrated awareness of equity; specifically focused on ways that race, language, gender, and disability intersect in our activity and athletic access and participationDemonstrated knowledge and skill in fundamental sports techniques and strategiesDemonstrated the ability to work productively and collaboratively with assistant coachesDemonstrated the ability to motivate student athletes in a positive and productive manner to assure the full development of their academic, personal and athletic potentialDemonstrated the use of positive communication techniques in working with student athletes, parents and staff in the development of a sports programDemonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal formDemonstrated skill in athletic program development and evaluationDemonstrated organizational skills and the ability to motivate othersOther desired attributes: vigor, flexibility, enthusiasm, and professional integrityMust hold or be able to obtain a valid CPR and First Aid CardMust be able to meet all WIAA coaching standardsBe a high school graduate (or equivalent)Position may be combined based on possible openings and endorsements with a posted certificated vacancy (see current certificated vacancy postings for requirements and application process RESPONSIBILITIESPlan, implement, and develop an effective sports program that is consistent with building, district curriculum/programs and WIAADocument and maintain written records of program plans, safety lessons, practice schedules and student athlete participation and attendanceLead, coach, and engage all student athletes regardless of background or abilityFoster and maintain a safe positive learning environment and practice good stewardship of athletic equipment, courts and athletic buildingsProcess information to make sound judgments and decisionsEstablish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of staff and stakeholdersCoach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in sportsDevelop practice plans that document the teaching of key safety skillsProvide supervision of athletes on the court, bus, locker rooms, weight room and any other practice, game place or team-related activities while responsible for athletesPlan and schedule a regular program of practice in seasonWork closely with the athletic coordinator in scheduling interscholastic contestsRecommend purchase of equipment, supplies and uniforms, as appropriateRequire necessary attendance forms, insurance records, physical examination clearance, etc. prior to and during the seasonEstablish performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competitionEnforce discipline and good sportsmanship behavior at all timesSupervise and directs assistant coaches in the performance of their dutiesEmphasize ethical and exemplary conduct off and on the court for coaches and playersOrganize practice sessions that are stimulating and instructivePrepare the athletes both physically and mentally to participate in athletic contestsMaintain consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours specified under contractPossess positive human relations skillsWORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDSDuties are normally performed in a school environment or outdoors. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a phone, see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.BENEFITS
