Equipment Operator

Job Summary The Lineman Operator is responsible for safely operating specialized equipment to support the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead electrical distribution and transmission systems. This role works closely with line crews to ensure equipment is positioned and operated efficiently while maintaining strict adherence to safety standards and operational procedures. Key Responsibilities Equipment Operation Safely operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, tensioners, cranes, and other specialized line construction equipment. Maneuver equipment to access work sites, position materials, and support overhead line work at various heights and locations. Line Construction Support Assist linemen with overhead line construction activities including pole setting, conductor stringing, and hardware installation. Operate equipment to dig pole holes, hoist materials, and position tools and equipment as directed. Maintenance & Repair Assistance Support routine maintenance, inspections, and repair of overhead powerlines and associated equipment. Transport tools, materials, and replacement components to job sites using appropriate equipment. Safety Compliance Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Properly use PPE, fall protection, and safety devices while operating equipment. Participate in safety meetings, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and hazard identification activities. Communication & Coordination Maintain clear communication with linemen, foremen, and supervisors regarding equipment status, job progress, and site conditions. Follow instructions and coordinate activities to ensure safe and efficient execution of work. Equipment Maintenance Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance on assigned equipment. Check fluid levels, hydraulic systems, tires, and safety devices. Report mechanical issues or safety concerns promptly for repair or service. Documentation & Reporting Complete equipment logs, inspection forms, and maintenance records accurately and in a timely manner. Maintain documentation related to equipment usage and safety compliance. Emergency Response Assist with emergency and storm restoration activities by operating equipment to support line crews. Work extended hours or respond to call-outs as required to restore service safely. Training & Continuous Improvement Participate in required training and certifications related to equipment operation and safety. Identify opportunities for improved efficiency, safety, and equipment utilization. Qualifications and Education Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certification in equipment operation preferred. Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment in electrical utility, powerline, or construction environments. Demonstrated proficiency operating bucket trucks, digger derricks, cranes, and related equipment. Strong understanding of safety procedures related to equipment operation and overhead line work. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required; ability to obtain and maintain a CDL if required. Ability to successfully pass a background check, pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. Excellent communication skills and ability to follow direction. Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including remote or rugged terrain. Ability to work rotating schedules, extended hours, and emergency call-outs as required. Journeyman Electrical Distribution Systems License (EL-1J) preferred but not required, depending on role assignment. Work Environment This position is primarily field-based and performed outdoors in varying weather conditions. This is a full-time position with work hours that may vary based on operational and project demands. Physical Demands The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this role: Prolonged standing, walking, climbing, and manual handling of tools and equipment. Ability to work at elevated heights and in physically demanding environments. Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Ability to perform strenuous physical activity for extended periods. Travel Regular travel within a designated service area is expected, with occasional extended travel as required.
