The instructor will provide individualized applied instruction to students on trumpet and/or French horn. This role is essential to supporting student success in applied music study, ensemble participation, and performance preparation in alignment with the mission and standards of the Department of Music and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Provide weekly one-on-one applied lessons in high brass instruments, emphasizing tone production, technical development, and stylistic interpretation.Prepare students for juries, recitals, ensemble auditions, and other departmental performance requirements.Develop instructional materials, lesson plans, and syllabi that align with NASM standards and departmental expectations.Maintain accurate attendance and grading records in accordance with University and departmental policy.Participate in semester-end juries and departmental evaluations to assess student achievement.Cultivate a positive, inclusive learning environment that supports students' artistic and academic growth.Collaborate with the Chair and Coordinator to ensure consistency and quality in instruction and student assessment.Repetitive references to "providing specialized instruction" and "attending juries" were condensed for clarity.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:Demonstrated excellence in trumpet and/or French horn performance and pedagogy.Commitment to undergraduate music education and mentoring students toward artistic and academic achievement.Ability to apply effective instructional strategies for diverse student populations.Proficiency in using learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard) and instructional technology.Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with a collegial approach to collaboration.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:This position does not have supervisory responsibility.OTHER DUTIES:Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the academic program and institutional mission.QUALIFICATIONS:To qualify as an adjunct instructor at Kentucky State University, the individual must meet:A Master's degree in the teaching discipline, orA Master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching fieldRecord of successful applied teaching at the college or secondary level preferred.WORKING CONDITIONS:Work is performed primarily on campus in instructional studios and performance spaces.Requires availability for weekly lessons, student juries, and departmental events as assigned.This is a temporary, part-time exempt position; no benefits are associated with adjunct appointments.University Mission StatementProvide transformative educational experiences to prepare graduates for making meaningful contributions to society.
