In this hands-on position, you'll inspect, service, and maintain diesel engines while following important safety and company guidelines. You'll work with tools and instruments to diagnose mechanical issues and make repairs. Over time, you may qualify to operate specialized equipment including locomotives in a shop setting, following federal standards. This physically active role offers on-the-job training and real opportunities for growth.Please watch our career video for more information https://www.gwrr.com/careers/Responsibilities:Comply with all federal, state, and other applicable railroad safety and operational regulationsFollow instructions when working with a certified trainer, mentor, or supervisorPerform daily inspections, servicing, and maintenance on diesel-electric locomotivesTroubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines, air equipment, trucks, or other components; repair or replace as necessaryPerform locomotive car-body repairs as necessary, including performing metal fabrication and weldingOperate forklifts, light cranes, power tools, and hydraulic tools while working outside in all weather conditions, in confined spaces, and/or at elevated heightsPerform other duties as assignedWorking Conditions / Physical Requirements:Full-time (40 plus hours weekly)Varying schedule in a 24/7 work environment that includes nights, holidays, weekends, and on-call as neededOutdoor work in all weather conditionsWalking on uneven surfaces and climbing ladders and equipment always ensuring three points of contact in varying environmental conditionsWorking at elevated heights of 18 feet or greater while adhering to fall protection safety guidelinesFrequent lifting of equipment and tools that could be up to 50 poundsMust be able to stoop, kneel, squat and twist as necessary while working on equipmentOccasional travel may be requiredSkills and Experience:At least 2 years of relevant work experience as a heavy mechanic is a plus4-year journeyman locomotive machinist / mechanic is a plusKnowledge of FRA regulations pertaining to locomotive maintenance and inspection is a plusKnowledge of railroad environmental requirements a plusLocomotive Servicing Engineer certification is a plus depending on locationWelding certification is a plusStrong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate via radio or in personPossess situational awareness and decision-making abilities to respond effectively in a safety sensitive environmentRequired Education and Credentials:High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experienceValid driver's licenseAt least 18 years of ageEmployment Requirements:Pre-employment physical, hearing, and vision medical reviewMay be subject to federally mandated drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment drug screeningBackground screening including criminal and motor vehicle driving historyRelocation:Must live within 50 miles of assigned location or be willing to relocate.
