Under direct supervision The Biorepository Laboratory Technologist will perform patient sample collection, registration in software, and processing of specimens for research use.This position will be working in the BTA laboratory with a team and expected to be on MUSC campus.Responsibilities35% Sample collection and processing.The clinical samples must be collected within 1 hour of notification from the pathology department/investigator.Patient information and samples are to be registered in the FreezerWorks on the same day. Consent forms scanned and shredded.Samples are to be processed on the same day as it is received.Tissue samples: Make frozen section, Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stain, coverslip and filing of slides after quality check.Quality assurance (QA) of tissue integrity will be checked by the Pathologist.Blood: Separate buffy coat and plasma.35% Sample storage and retrieval.Storage of the samples in a -80• C freezer, well-organized in the designatedarea that coincides with the FreezerWorks.Retrieval of the samples when requested by the Pathologist or Manager.Separate storage of the clinical trial samples by PI in the -80• C freezer.15% Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cell (PBMC) isolation and labeling of the tubes.Once complete, bring the samples to the manager or store appropriately.10% Inventory management and timely communication.Inform the manager of instruments, reagents, and supplies to be ordered on amonthly basis.There should be no delay in work due to lack of instruments, reagents, and supplies.5% Attend BTA weekly meetings, trainings and other duties as assigned.Preferred Additional Knowledge and Skills:The ideal candidate will have advanced technical and theoretical understanding of sample collection and processing pertaining to biomedical research with an emphasis on cancer-related experimentation. The candidate should have a proven track record of hands-on laboratory science and be experienced in scientific troubleshooting. The candidate should have a working knowledge of laboratory techniques and centrifugation. An established history of working in a laboratory environment, or working with patient samples, is strongly preferred. The candidate needs a current knowledge of experimental methodology and a passion for continuing education on techniques through literature review, vendor workshops, and attendance of university seminars.Additional Job DescriptionMinimum Requirements: A bachelor's degree in a related medical or scientific discipline; or an associate degree or equivalent technical training in a related medical, scientific or technical discipline and two years journey-level work experience in a related field.Physical Requirements: (Note: The following descriptions are applicable to this section: Continuous - 6-8 hours per shift; Frequent - 2-6 hours per shift; Infrequent - 0-2 hours per shift) Ability to perform job functions in an upright position. (Frequent) Ability to lower objects, up to 30 lbs., from height of 72 inches to floor level, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to push/pull objects, up to 50 lbs., unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift and carry objects up to 30 lbs. a distance of five (5) floors and to outlying buildings. (Frequent) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors.
