Safety Manager

Nichols Contracting, Inc. (NCI) is a family-owned and operated Construction and Contracting business headquartered in Columbia, MD with offices in Richmond, VA and Royal Palm Beach and Orlando, FL with a team of 170 employees. NCI is a full-service general contractor focused on providing premier services in all aspects of the construction process, from concept to completion. We manage a broad range of commercial construction projects, including new construction, tenant fit outs, and renovations. NCI services a diverse group of markets including federal, state, and local governments, as well as a variety of corporate and special industry organizations that require complex life safety and critical infrastructure needs.We are seeking an experienced Safety Manager to join our team. The Safety Manager will be responsible for overseeing the safety of the work site and for enforcing compliance with regulations, reviewing health, safety guidelines to minimize injuries, and providing a great benefit to the safety of workers on-site and the company as a whole. A Safety Manager must present and explain site safety plans to people on-site as well as provide training to employees. Duties to include but not limited to:Essential Functions:Screen construction projects sites before work commences, identifying safety-related risksInspect active project sites to evaluate ongoing work conditions to ensure compliance. Develop inspection reports indicating positive and negative findings for presentation to management.Liaise with external parties such as government-employed inspectors to evaluate the process of construction sitesWork with project management teams and field workers to implement and devise solutions to safety-related issues on project sitesReview projects for adequate disposal systems, evacuation plans, lighting, and ventilation to ensure minimum or no danger to the safety or health of the site guests or workersMaintain safety-related paperwork, including OSHA 300 logs and safety training certifications, such as OSHA OTITrain company employees on safe work practices and emergency proceduresAdvise management of subcontractors and employees who fail to comply with minimum safety standards and recommend actionRepresent Nichols in meetings with government bodies and other organizations on issues regarding workplace health and safetyInvestigate any safety-related incidents and accurately report the facts to management.Manage safety-related issues with interested outside parties, including OSHA representatives. Represent Nichols in all such matters.Perform other duties as assignedQualifications/Skills:**Prior experience supporting airport projects is strongly preferred**Minimum of 10 years of Safety experience in a related field (construction).First Aid/CPR certificationPreferred Qualifications: Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Safety Trained Supervisor (STS), or Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST), at a minimum (Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred)First Aid/CPR certification OSHA 30 for constructionOSHA 500 preferredPreferred 40- hour EM 385-1-1 Construction Safety Hazard Awareness Course for Contractors, within the past 5 years Preferred USACE Quality Management for Contractors’ certification, within the past 5 yearsPreferred documented training/competency in managing Excavation, Scaffolding, Fall Protection, Hazardous Energy, and Confined Space safety.Strong communications skills – the ability to communicate effectively both written and oralGood listening skills – the ability to listen effectively and receive feedback from the employee’s perspective without passing judgmentKnowledge of OSHA standards and regulations relating to the specific trade or activity being managedAbility to assess and prioritize multiple business unit needs, tasks, projects, and demandsAble to handle confidential informationAbility to access heights via ladders or scaffoldingGeneral knowledge of the work of primary construction trades to develop effective safe solutions as required to maintain construction progressWillingness to stop construction work immediately in the event of an imminent hazard. Immediately inform management personnel. Able to navigate stairs, ladders, and uneven floors or ground conditionsAble to work under various environmental or site conditionsGood team player, Works well independently, Self-confident, Multi-tasking ability, Leadership, motivated, and independentEducation and Experience:High school diploma or equivalent requiredBachelor’s degree in Safety, Health, Engineering or related discipline preferredMinimum 5 years of commercial, government, or industrial project management experience, including at least 4 years management-level safety professional experienceCurrent certifications in First Aid, CPR, OSHA, 30-hour Construction Safety and Industry Standards plus Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
