Mechanical Lead

Blackfield Associates are currently partnered with a global pharmaceutical manufacturer to support their search for a Mechanical Lead to join their project based in Indiana on an initial 12-month contract.Key ResponsibilitiesLead all mechanical process equipment activities from design through installation, commissioning, and turnover.Oversee the delivery and integration of process equipment such as reactors, mixers, filtration systems, centrifuges, dryers, tanks, CIP/SIP skids, and other API manufacturing equipment.Review and approve equipment specifications, datasheets, vendor drawings, P&IDs, functional requirements, and technical submittals.Coordinate with process engineering, utilities, piping, electrical, controls/automation, and C&Q teams to ensure proper equipment interfaces and operational readiness.Provide technical support during construction, resolving field issues, responding to RFIs, and ensuring installations follow approved design and GMP expectations.Manage vendor relationships throughout design finalization, FAT, delivery, installation, SAT, and system commissioning.Support development of commissioning and qualification protocols for mechanical process equipment.Conduct field walkdowns, verify equipment installation quality, support punch‑list creation and closure, and ensure documentation completeness for turnover.Ensure compliance with mechanical standards, safety requirements, pressure equipment regulations, and pharmaceutical industry guidelines.Identify risks related to equipment delivery, installation, and readiness, driving mitigation actions with contractors and vendors.Participate in design reviews, hazard assessments, constructability reviews, and equipment integration workshops.Support operational readiness by coordinating with manufacturing, maintenance, quality, and facilities teams.Experience RequiredBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field.Sufficient experience delivering mechanical process equipment within pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical, or API manufacturing environments.Strong knowledge of process equipment design, specifications, sanitary/hygienic standards, and GMP requirements.Proven experience managing vendors, equipment packages, FAT/SAT activities, and mechanical installation on large‑scale capital projects.Strong understanding of piping interfaces, utilities connection requirements, automation integration, and equipment commissioning.Experience supporting commissioning and qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) for mechanical process systems.Ability to interpret and review P&IDs, 3D models, general arrangements, and mechanical design documentation.Excellent communication, coordination, and problem‑solving skills in a fast‑paced construction environment.Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple equipment packages simultaneously.
