JOB SUMMARY:The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 250 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.The Japan Chair program was established to provide a venue in Washington for the study of U.S.-Japan relations and increasing mutual understanding. As Japan's role in Asian and global affairs continues to grow, the Japan Chair program seeks to define a strategic agenda for the U.S.-Japan relationship in a bilateral, regional, and global context. The current research agenda covers a broad range of themes including Japanese domestic politics, U.S.-Japan security and economic ties, and strategic coordination with other like-minded countries in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.The Japan Chair program is recruiting a Deputy Director who will report directly to the Japan Chair and play a central role in program administration and activities. This is an in-person position at the CSIS headquarters.The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $140,000 based on experience.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The Deputy Director is responsible for managing day-to-day operations and administrative functions of the Japan Chair program. Essential duties include but are not limited to the following:Develop and manage programmatic aspects of large-scale projects in coordination with the Japan Chair, including identifying potential sources of funding, proposal development, project implementation, and reportingWork closely with the Japan Chair on short- and long-term strategy planning and developmentOrganize and execute public and private events related to the work of the Japan Chair program, including engagements with visiting fellows and executive education programsDraft program materials and edit publicationsDevelop communications strategies to promote program research and activitiesProvide direction and oversight for program staff and interns, ensuring high-quality outputs and providing mentorshipBuild relationships with CSIS administrative teams and external partnersAt the direction of the Japan Chair, provide support for research on topics such as Japanese politics and foreign policy, U.S.-Japan relations, and Indo-Pacific geopolitics related to reports, policy briefs, and other publicationsKNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:Bachelor's degree and at least 6 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree in a related fieldExcellent written and verbal communication skills in EnglishExcellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced work environmentAbility to manage projects, personnel, budgets, and grantsExperience coordinating events and working with external stakeholders across government, industry, academia, and/or mediaEffective interpersonal skills and ability to work flexibly as part of a teamHigh degree of professionalismDemonstrated expertise on issues driving Japan's policy debate and the agenda for U.S.-Japan relationsProficiency in Japanese required (JLPT N1 or above)OUR BENEFITS:Medical insuranceDental insuranceVision insuranceLife insuranceShort-term and long-term disability403(b) for retirement planningTuition AssistanceFlexible Spending AccountHealth Savings AccountMilitary Leave12 Paid HolidaysSick leaveVacation leavePHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS:The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee working in an office environment.
