Composite Lab Technician Job Description Classification - Non-Exempt Reports to – Technical / R&D Summary/Objective The Composite Lab Technician performs composite materials processing & characterization of Axiom products. Follows directions provided by the materials/chemical engineers in the Technical/R&D department. Follows all company policies and procedures to ensure product integrity and quality control. This position requires proactiveness, precision and attention to detail. Essential Functions 1. Carry out composite processing tasks (Layup, Kitting, Bagging, Curing, Machining). 2. Safely operate laboratory & composite processing equipment (Autoclave, Vacuum Oven, Furnace, Analytical, Mechanical & Machining Equipment). 3. Conduct lab-scale resin mixing & coating trials and maintain detailed records. 4. Carry out physical, mechanical, and analytical testing to predefined specifications and standards, maintaining clear and concise records of the testing, and ensuring associated equipment meets the needs of specifications and the business alike. 5. Work directly with supervision to maintain a clearly defined schedule, ensuring resource requirements are communicated to all affected departments. Provide feedback on processes and documentation. 6. Create and maintain close working relationships with all other lab employees, support the needs of the business as communicated by supervision, and ensure the communicated 'Lab Rules' are followed at all times. 7. Observe all company Health and Safety policies and utilize safe working practices. 8. Maintain housekeeping daily to meet company standards. 9. Supervisory Responsibility This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Work Environment Lab, office environment with some exposure to factory floor. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is largely a standing position. This would require the ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds. Ability to wear a NIOSH approved respirator. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position. Standard Hours of work are Monday through Friday, which are subject to change depending on the demand of the position. Travel No travel is expected for this position. Required Education and Experience 1. High school diploma, General Education Degree or Equivalent, with 2 years of related experience. 2. Industrial lab or production shop experience. 3. Some analytical testing experience (DSC, DMA, Rheology, FTIR, HPLC, Particle size analyzer, or others) 4. Proficiency using MS Office software (Excel required). 5. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Preferred Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in chemistry/chemical engineering/materials science or 1-3 years of composites processing/testing experience preferred. Resin mixing and research lab experience a plus (especially in composites, polymers and adhesives).
