Senior Medical Director - Anesthesiology, Surgical Services - System

ScopeThis is a system-wide leadership role with key organizational relationships across Intermountain Health with a specific focus on leading the performance and continuous improvement of Anesthesiology and Surgical Services. This position reports to Clinical Shared Services Leadership.Job EssentialsLead the Intermountain Department of AnesthesiologyOversee all Anesthesia related components of patient care across the Intermountain systemDirection and review of Associate Medical Director(s) of AnesthesiologyMedical Direction of Intermountain Anesthesiology Advanced Practice Clinicians (CRNAs)Medical Direction of Anesthesiology leads from each siteOversee Anesthesiology subspecialty team(s) and focus workgroup(s)Work with facility administrators to address site Anesthesia needsSupport and drive progress in key process indicators (KPI) metrics of Surgical ServicesDrive excellence and affordability in anesthesia and sedationReview safety events and perform quality peer reviewsCollaborate and interface with clinical programs to develop and promote best practicesPartner with operational lanes to optimize care interfaces and collaborationsAssists in leading Physician/Advanced practice provider collaborations and defines and establishes care models that best meet our patients needs and our system fundamentals.Ensures that evidence-based clinical care standards for Surgical Services are established and effectively implemented across Intermountain for appropriate caregiversResponsible for execution of policies and procedures related to operating room environmentsAssists in educating compliance with appropriate standards required by all governmental agenciesIn partner with leadership, perform scheduled reviews of appropriateness of cases. Concerning behavior addressed as well as communicated to hospital and clinical program leadershipChampions quality initiatives and policies and reports infractions collaborating to eliminate future infractionsAssists in ensuring acceptable patient satisfaction ratesRegular attendance of committee meetingsAssist in quality reporting - Effectively addresses performance concerns for providers, including peer review for cases within SurgicalMaintain standards of Zero HarmAddress inappropriate or unprofessional behavior - Conducts annual performance reviews/conversations for physician leaders.Address capital needs of the systemPromote employee engagementPresent professional appearanceAssist in the development and management of operational, financial, and fundamentals of extraordinary care metricsCollaborate with clinical programs for strategic and best practice development and implementationDevelopment and implementation of committees related to the needs of Surgical Services including but not limited to utilization, quality, new products, and strategyPartner with inpatient hospital operations to maximize environment of careMaintain environment of collegiality with consultants as well as in-patient caregiversAssists in establishing professional standards for physicians within Intermountain Surgical ServicesAssists in ensuring physician and APP alignment for Surgical Services across the Intermountain systemAssists in Developing and implementing committees related to the needs of Surgical Services including but not limited to utilization, quality, new products and strategyPartnership with SCO for cost savings initiativesSupports and drives results for the fundamentals of care for Intermountain with concern for reducing the cost of care/per member per month (pmpm) costs, with focus on improving the affordability of healthcare.Supports and drives results for key metrics identified through Specialty Based CareSkillsLeadershipInterpersonal CommunicationRelationship BuildingStrategic PlanningPeople ManagementContinual Improvement ProcessWorkforce PlanningHealth AdministrationMedical Staff TrainingHealth CareMinimum QualificationsMedical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree. Education must be obtained through an ACGME or AOA accredited institution, will be verified.Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification in a surgical or anesthesia specialty.Active Medical Licensure, or in the process of obtaining licensure, is required.At least three years of clinical experience in a surgical or anesthesia service practice setting.Three years of experience leading successful improvement in clinical settings.Three years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.Experience with change management with the ability to provide leadership in the adaptation and implementation of new processes and /or technology that enhance safety.Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.Preferred QualificationsMaster's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or other business- related field.Trained in improvement science (i.e., Six Sigma, Lean, Project management, Advanced Training Program)Experience working in a complex health system (hospitals, ambulatory clinics, post-acute care, etc.).Demonstrated leadership of clinicians.Certified in healthcare communication, coaching or an equivalent experience with external entities that drive and support Experience of Care approaches and standards, including government agencies, academic institutions, universities and related organizations of higher education, and other public institutions.
