Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) — a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval — award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States—or in the District of Columbia Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); or (3) Other residencies (non‑US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and appropriate patient care experience Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged PRPs are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision In addition, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs Proficiency in spoken and written English Additional Requirements Must at all times maintain board certification in Internal Medicine Preferred Experience At least 3 years experience working as a hospitalist At least 3 years experience teaching and supervising Internal Medicine residents Physical Requirements Incumbents must be able to perform the duties of a physician Moderate lifting (15‑44 lbs.) and light carrying (under 15 lbs.), use of fingers with both hands required, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision (correctable at 13‑16 inches to Jaeger 1‑4), specific visual requirement 20/50 one eye, 20/100 other eye (glasses permitted), hearing (aid permitted), mental and emotional stability, ability to hear conversational voice (aid permitted), protracted or irregular work hours Requires long periods of walking, standing, and sitting May be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing May occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders Must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and shifting priorities based on patient needs Must comply with any Employee Health requirements as a condition of employment Duties Location: Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC), North Chicago, Illinois. The incumbent will provide administrative and clinical oversight and will be actively involved in decisions supporting the function and goals of the internal medicine residency program The Program Director is responsible for the overall planning, implementation, management, and evaluation of the residency program The Program Director will ensure the program maintains accreditation standards and fosters an environment of academic excellence and professional development This position requires coordination with various departments, faculty members, and administrative staff The Program Director must possess specialty expertise and at least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience (or qualifications acceptable to the Review Committee) Maintain board certification in Internal Medicine and clinical practice time to create and maintain an educational environment that promotes high‑quality care, patient safety, and resident well‑being Perform a variety of complex tasks and lead and direct the work of others Be familiar with administrative procedures, quality measurement, regulations related to the practice of medicine, and the Joint Commission Position is 50 % administrative and 50 % clinical (Hospitalist) Ensure the residency program adheres to ACGME requirements Maintain accreditation by meeting and exceeding accrediting bodies’ requirements Oversee the educational curriculum and clinical training of residents Arrange didactic activities, including lectures, workshops, and seminars Oversee the evaluation and feedback system for residents, including direct observation, faculty assessments, and self‑assessments Prepare for and participate in internal and external program reviews Promote a learning environment conducive to professional development and academic excellence Provide effective leadership and governance for the residency program Ensure clinical care is delivered in accordance with hospital and VHA policy, meeting and exceeding community standards and VHA national benchmarks Supervise and mentor residents, providing guidance on academic and career development Provide opportunities for faculty development to enhance teaching skills and professional growth Develop and manage the residency program budget Participate in scholarly activities, including research, publications, and presentations Oversee the recruitment and selection process for new residents and coordinate the interview process and selection committee meetings Schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
