This role requires technical expertise, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to safety and excellence. You will work in a fast-paced, hands on environment, ensuring all vehicles are in top working condition and compliant with safety regulations. This job reports to Director of Transportation. Essential FunctionsLead and mentor a team of mechanics, fostering a collaborative and service oriented culture.Diagnose, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on district vehicles, including school buses, trucks, and equipment.Ensure compliance with all district, state and federal safety regulations.Manage fuel inventory to ensure sufficient availability for district operations.Monitor and oversee procurement of parts, tools, and supplies, ensuring budget efficiency and proper inventory management.Maintain accurate maintenance records and reports to track repairs, inspections, and compliance.Transport buses and repair equipment as needed for emergency repairs or field service calls.Collaborate with the Director of Transportation to assess work performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement solutions. Other FunctionsDirects other personnel as may be required (e.g. welding duties, etc.) for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and AbilitiesSKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating heavy equipment; operating tools/equipment used in maintenance of vehicles and grounds equipment including mowers, tractors, graders, fork lifts, etc.; and preparing and maintaining accurate records. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, airbrakes, electrical systems and safety items. ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; analyze datautilizing defined but different processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: ability to direct and supervise others on routine and complex tasks and repairs, and prioritize and establish flow chart plans for repairs and preventative work scheduling. ResponsibilityResponsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization's services. Work EnvironmentThe usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 20% walking, and 70% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.Minimum of 5 years of experience in diesel mechanics, with a strong background in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, electrical systems, and air brake systems.At least 2 years of leadership experience, with the ability to mentor and supervise a teamStrong problem solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot issues, implement solutions and improve efficiency.A commitment to safety and service, ensuring vehicles meet all required standards and students have reliable transportation.The ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting heavy equipment, standing for extended periods, and working in extreme temperatures.Education: Targeted, job related education with study in job-related area. Required TestingAlcohol and Drug Test Pre-placement Physical Exam Certificates and LicensesAn ASE Entry Level Certification, demonstrating foundational knowledge of diesel technology. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) School Bus Certifications preferred, A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement (or the ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe). Continuing Educ. / TrainingFirst Aid/CPR Certification within 4 months ClearancesCriminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance Random drug testing
