ESTIMATOR – HEAVY CIVIL & GEOTECHNICAL CONSTRUCTION Location: Southern California — Newhall or Orange County Offices Reports To: Senior Estimator / Preconstruction Manager / COO ABOUT CALEX Calex Engineering Company (Calex) is a general engineering contractor providing specialty foundation, shoring, excavation, and mass grading services for complex building and civil projects. Based in Los Angeles, we are recognized as one of the most respected and highly recommended shoring and earthwork specialty contractors in the region, while continuing to expand throughout California. We perform work under both design-build and traditional bid-build delivery models and specialize in integrated shoring-and-excavation packages that reduce interface risk, compress schedules, and improve constructability. Our self-perform capabilities include deep foundations, ground improvement, earth retention systems, structural excavation, and mass grading. Supported by strong in-house engineering and estimating teams, Calex delivers safe, technically sound, and execution-focused solutions on challenging projects. POSITION SUMMARY The Estimator prepares accurate, competitive, and contract-compliant estimates for mass grading, shoring, excavation, and deep foundation projects. This mid-level role builds on the Assistant Estimator foundation and works closely with the Senior Estimator and Operations to ensure production-based assumptions reflect company means and methods, with a clear progression toward Senior Estimator. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Estimating & Proposal Development · Prepare comprehensive estimates based on drawings, specs, geotechnical reports, and addenda. · Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and develop production-based cost models (labor, equipment, materials, trucking). · Prepare clear bid forms, scope narratives, qualifications, exclusions, and value-engineering options. · Communicate with clients/contractors to establish relationships. · Develop preliminary schedules from estimates. · Competent in contract reviews. Subcontractor & Vendor Management · Solicit, evaluate, and level subcontractor/vendor proposals; confirm scope alignment. · Maintain relationships and current market pricing. Risk Identification & Coordination · Identify geotechnical, constructability, logistics, and schedule risks; elevate significant items to leadership. · Coordinate with Operations Manager/General Superintendent to validate production rates and equipment spreads. Data & Continuous Improvement · Maintain cost histories, production benchmarks, and bid result tracking. · Contribute to estimating tools, templates, and best practices. QUALIFICATIONS · Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred; or equivalent combination of education and relevant construction estimating or field experience. · 6–10+ years of field/project engineering experience in heavy civil/geotechnical construction with estimating experience. · Proficiency in Microsoft Office; estimating software experience (e.g., Agtek, Civil 3D, HeavyBid, Excel, or similar). · Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
