Position Summary
The Physician Associate works collaboratively with all members of the care team, providing world class service to both patients and staff at Martin’s Point Health Care.
Job Description
Maine Revised Statutes, Title 32 #3270-A and Chapters 2 and 3 of the Rules of the Board of Registration in Medicine provide for Physicians Associates to work under the supervision of a licensed physician or doctor of osteopathy. The Associate must have graduated from a training program approved by the Board of Registration in Medicine or by the Board of Registration in Osteopathic Medicine, must be registered and certified by the board, and must be nationally certified eligible or have passed the national certified examination for the Physician Associate. The scope of practice cannot exceed that delegated by the supervising physician or alternative supervising physician. The Associate’s prescriptive practice is dictated by the scope of the supervisor’s practice.
Key Outcomes
Elicit a detailed and accurate history, perform an appropriate physician examination, identify problems, record and present pertinent data in a meaningful manner, and create a treatment plan that includes prescribing medication.
Perform or interpret routine diagnostic studies, including routine laboratory procedures, common radiologic studies and electrocardiographic tracings.
Within the limits of professional training and approved privileges, perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, incision and drainage of superficial infections, treatment of verrucae, follow-up of simple fractures, removal of splinters, and simple laceration repairs.
Provide instruction, counseling, and prescriptions for patients regarding physical and mental health, proper diet, disease prevention, therapy, growth and development, family planning, situational adjustments, reactions, and other health care matters.
Assist in inpatient settings by performing patient rounds, recording progress notes, determining and implementing therapeutic plans under the supervising physician or alternative supervising physician, and compiling and recording case summaries.
Assist in delivering services to patients requiring continuing care in homes, nursing homes, and extended‑care facilities, including reviewing and monitoring treatment and therapy plans.
Perform independent evaluation and therapeutic procedures essential for appropriate response to life‑threatening situations.
Facilitate appropriate referral of patients and maintain awareness of community health facilities, agencies, and resources.
Prescribe and dispense only drugs approved by the Board of Licensure in Medicine.
Collaborate with the physician supervisor to work within the appropriate delegation of medical tasks established in MPHC’s Plan of Supervision.
Provide care to patients in all Martin’s Point Health Care facilities per most current contract agreements.
Document capability and continued competency for privileges granted by the Medical Executive Committee.
Participate in daily huddles and regular team meetings to improve workflows and contribute to improving patient population outcomes.
Perform other duties as requested or required by the Practice Medical Director.
Education / Experience
Graduate of an accredited program by the Committee on Allied Health Education, which is sponsored by the American Medical Association and/or its equivalent Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Association.
Required Licenses / Certifications
BLS Certified
State licensed as a Physician Associate
Skills / Knowledge / Competencies (Behaviors)
Knowledge of clinical theory, practice and medical care to evaluate patient care.
Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of Physician Associates to provide ongoing patient care.
Skill in taking medical history to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
Skill in preparing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
Ability to maintain quality control standards.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
