Volunteer: Design Data Protection Policy and Procedures for Sensitive Migrant Storytelling Data
This is a volunteer opportunity provided by Taproot Foundation, a nonprofit creating social change through pro bono connections.Creshendo is seeking a data protection expert to help us design clear, practical policies and procedures for handling sensitive data within our storytelling project. We collect stories from migrants and refugees, which may include personal identifiers, audio, and video content. This type of data requires careful handling to ensure privacy, safety, and long-term protection. We are looking to build a structured approach to data protection that is appropriate for an early-stage, global nonprofit working across digital and remote contexts. Over a 4–6 week engagement, the volunteer will help us: Develop a data protection policy tailored to storytelling and sensitive personal data Create practical procedures for storing and managing sensitive materials Advise on best practices for separating identifiers from content (for example, storing names and media files separately) Define access controls and internal data handling protocols Identify risks related to digital storage, sharing, and cross-border data use Provide guidance aligned with humanitarian data protection standards where relevant Familiarity with humanitarian data frameworks, including OCHA guidelines, is highly valuable. This project is focused on building a clear, usable system that our team can follow consistently.Creshendo’s storytelling work is designed to amplify the voices of migrants and refugees while preserving their dignity and safety. Protecting sensitive data is essential to maintaining that trust. Your work will help us ensure that stories can be shared responsibly without exposing individuals to risk. This foundation will allow us to grow our storytelling work with confidence and care. You will work with our Storytelling Team and Executive Director. We will provide: Background on how stories are collected and stored Current tools and practices Access to team members for context and feedback We are collaborative and responsive, and we are looking for recommendations that are both thoughtful and practical for a volunteer-led team.Creshendo Mission: Creshendo’s mission is to empower displaced populations by fostering their integration and self-reliance. Through specialized programs and support services, we equip them with the tools, knowledge, and resources to navigate new environments, advocate for their needs, and achieve their aspirations.
