Position Summary:
The Engineering Intern supports EMCORE's engineering team at the Quartz MEMS facility in Concord, CA on active hardware programs spanning design, test, and product development. Working alongside engineers and an assigned mentor, the intern gains hands-on exposure to engineering practice in an aerospace and defense environment while contributing to real project deliverables and building technical and professional skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist engineering staff with design, analysis, testing, and documentation tasks on assigned projects.
Support data collection, reduction, and reporting for engineering tests and experiments.
Participate in design reviews, team meetings, and project status updates.
Create and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and procedures as directed.
Use engineering tools and software (e.g., CAD, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or equivalent) to complete assigned tasks.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Design Engineering, Test Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality.
Maintain accurate records of work performed and communicate progress to the assigned mentor/manager.
Adhere to EMCORE's safety, quality, and export control policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
Currently enrolled in an accredited degree program (Associate's, Bachelor's, or Graduate level) in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
Minimum GPA of 3.0, or as otherwise approved by the hiring manager.
Basic proficiency with engineering or scientific software tools appropriate to the assigned discipline.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work on site in Concord, CA per the schedule and hours outlined in the Intern Contract Details section below.

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools.
Coursework or project experience related to sensors, optics, or space/defense hardware.
Experience with test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, multimeters).
Prior exposure to an aerospace, defense, or regulated manufacturing environment.

Intern Contract Details:
The ideal candidate will work 16 to 24 (not to exceed 29) hours per week on site in Concord during typical business hours (7:00am – 5:00pm). Exact schedule will be finalized with the Hiring Manager/Supervisor during the interview and offer of employment process. Hourly compensation is $20.00 per hour, paid on a bi-weekly payroll cycle. Employee Health benefits are not included. The designated time period for this internship begins as soon as possible, with a contracted end date of December 31, 2026. Employment beyond this date will be based on evolving business needs and continuous review of candidate performance. If either party (Company or Intern) intends to end the employment agreement, a minimum of 2 weeks' notice shall be provided, in writing to Human Resources (HR).
As a federal contractor, we are required to have all candidates offered employment to pass a criminal background check prior to starting employment.
ITAR REQUIREMENTS:
Separate from employment eligibility verification (Form I-9), this position requires access to technology, software, and hardware controlled under U.S. export regulations (ITAR/EAR), consistent with the U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residence requirement stated above.
