Financial Controller

A national non-profit is seeking a Controller to lead the organization’s accounting function and ensure the highest standards of financial accuracy, compliance, and operational discipline.Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Finance, the Controller will own the integrity of the organization’s financials—overseeing accounting operations, audits, internal controls, and grant compliance across a complex, multi-state nonprofit network.This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can both execute at a high level and build systems that scale. The Controller will play a critical role in strengthening financial infrastructure as the organization continues to grow. ResponsibilitiesAccounting Leadership & Close• Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and consistency• Prepare and oversee GAAP-compliant financial statements and supporting schedules• Maintain integrity of the general ledger and all core accounting functions• Oversee preparation of income statements and key financial reports• Ensure appropriate revenue recognition, cost allocation, and expense classificationAudit, Compliance & Controls• Lead the annual audit and Single Audit (A-133)• Serve as point of contact for external auditors• Maintain continuous audit readiness, including documentation, schedules, and controls• Strengthen and enforce internal controls, policies, and procedures• Partner with HR on 403(b) audit and compliance requirements• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and grant-specific requirementsGrant & Fund Accounting• Oversee financial management of multi-state government, foundation, and corporate grants• Ensure accurate tracking, reporting, and compliance for restricted and unrestricted funds• Strengthen systems for grant reporting, documentation, and audit support• Provide guidance on financial aspects of grant management across the organizationSystems & Process Improvement•Serve as internal lead for Financial Edge, including structure, reporting, and troubleshooting•Oversee and improve the integration between Financial Edge and Raiser’s Edge•Identify and implement improvements to streamline accounting workflows and reporting processes•Build scalable systems to support a growing, multi-entity organizationQualifications•Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance•8–12+ years of progressive accounting experience, with significant nonprofit experience•CPA strongly preferred•Deep expertise in nonprofit accounting, GAAP, and grant compliance•Experience with Single Audit (A-133) required •Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge strongly preferred•Proven ability to manage teams and operate in a complex, multi-entity environment
