If you are interested in improving the environment and advancing your career, then EKI is the place for you.The Environmental Technician reports to the Team Leader and is a hands-on, field-focused role supporting environmental investigation, remediation, construction, and operations projects for industrial, commercial, and municipal clients. The position is ideal for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, solving practical field problems, and building, repairing, and maintaining mechanical systems in a safe and professional manner. Day-to-day work focuses on collecting environmental samples and data, making field observations, and overseeing contractors. The Environmental Technician role is primarily performed at EKI project sites in Northern California. Successful candidates are mechanically inclined, safety-focused, comfortable using hand and power tools, and enjoy working with their hands in active field environments.Primary Duties & ResponsibilitiesYour responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to the following:Prepare for and plan field work, including preparation of documentation and equipment, participation in planning meetings with project teams, coordination with laboratories, and scheduling the work of subcontractorsConduct field work at project sites including:Soil, groundwater, soil vapor, and indoor air samplingSite inspectionsObserve and document the work of other partiesConstruction, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of remedial systemsManage drillers and subcontractorsConstruction managementReview and follow project work plans and standard procedures to ensure samples and data are collected and handled correctlySafely use hand tools, power tools, and field equipment including drills, saws, grinders, hammers, wrenches, pumps, generators, and other construction and maintenance equipmentAssist with construction, installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of environmental remediation and monitoring systemsPerform field fabrication, assembly, modification, and repair of piping, fittings, pumps, hoses, valves, sampling systems, and related equipmentSupport site construction activities including layout, material handling, equipment setup, trenching support, and system startup/shutdown activitiesMaintain field vehicles, trailers, tools, and equipment in a clean, organized, and operating conditionFollow and enforce strict health and safety procedures while working around heavy equipment, construction activities, industrial facilities, and hazardous materialsParticipate in field troubleshooting and problem-solving under changing site conditionsCoordinate with senior staff on project planning, schedules, and site reportsOperate, maintain, and calibrate environmental monitoring equipment and toolsManage and organize sampling supplies, equipment, vehicles, and office space at EKI's field officeAssist with planning and leadership of field skills and operations training for staffAssist with special projects and other tasks as neededAct as EKI and EKI’s clients’ on-site outward-facing professional representativeQualifications & RequirementsEducationHigh School Diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree preferredKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesEntry to Mid-Level experience as a TechnicianStrong mechanical aptitude and comfort performing hands-on workExperience safely using hand tools, power tools, and mechanical equipment preferredExperience in construction, mechanical trades, environmental field work, drilling support, remediation systems, automotive/mechanical repair, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fabrication, landscaping, or related technical trades is highly desirableAbility to build, assemble, repair, troubleshoot, and maintain field systems and equipmentAbility to work safely and effectively around construction equipment, drilling operations, utilities, and industrial facilitiesComfortable working outdoors in physically demanding environments and variable weather conditionsOSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour training preferred but not requiredCompetenciesStrong work ethic, reliability, attention to detail, and commitment to safetyTakes initiative and enjoys solving practical field and mechanical challengesComfortable adapting to changing field conditions and prioritiesAbility to work effectively both independently and as part of a field teamMust have effective communication skillsMust have ability to multi-task, stay organized, work independently, and collaborate with various project teamsMust have a great attitude and eagerness to learnMust have a current valid driver’s license and a clean driving recordPHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENTThis is an active, hands-on role. You should be able to:Work in a fast-paced environment with high-volume workload and frequent short deadlinesPerform physically active outdoor work involving lifting, carrying, climbing, digging, tool operation, equipment setup, and material handlingWork safely around drilling equipment, excavation activities, construction sites, industrial operations, traffic, and active remediation systemsUse hand and power tools for field installation, repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting activitiesFrequently load, unload, transport, and organize tools, supplies, pumps, hoses, generators, and sampling equipmentWork in muddy, dusty, noisy, hot, cold, wet, or otherwise challenging field conditionsObtain medical clearance to work on hazardous waste site(s)Lift up to 50 lbsStand, sit, bend, and stoop for extended periods during field workWith or without accommodation, work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain, variable outdoor conditions including heat, noise, and/or chemicalsWork in an environment with heavy, dangerous moving equipmentWork up to 10- to 12-hour days when field conditions require itMaintain OSHA HAZWOPER and other applicable certifications including but not limited to ladder safety training, fall arrest training, etc.Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed, such as safety glasses, hard hat, boots, respirator, and hearing protectionUse powered equipment and heavy tools to perform shallow drilling, well and probe maintenance, maintenance of remedial systems, or remove nuts and bolts on filters or well vaults, etc.Travel RequirementsTravel is required and may be up to 75% or more of the time, including overnight stays for field work at potentially remote locations.
