Role DescriptionSenior Software Developer - AI Agents Document ProcessingRole OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer to join the Digital IT organization at Black Veatch The role focuses on designing building and enhancing backend capabilities for LLMbased agents retrievalaugmented generation RAG document and image processing ETL workflows APIs reusable services and data pipelines supporting modern digital productsYou will work across application development data engineering and AIenabled automation owning complex backend components and shaping productionready patterns This role is ideal for a backendfocused engineer experienced in agent workflows RAG document ingestion integrations and backend service development while maintaining reliability security maintainability and usabilityThe DIT Digital Products team enables Black Veatchs people projects and businesses through digital products data analytics and AIenabled solutions Teams operate using agile productoriented practices with a strong focus on quality security reliability usability and maintainabilityKey ResponsibilitiesDesign develop and maintain backend services supporting AIenabled products and internal toolsBuild and enhance LLMbased agents RAG workflows and toolcalling patternsEvaluate AI workflow quality retrieval effectiveness prompt behavior and output consistencyDevelop document ingestion parsing classification extraction transformation and generation pipelinesSupport image processing and multimodal workflows including OCR metadata extraction and content enrichmentBuild ETL and data transformation workflows for structured and unstructured contentDevelop services using TypeScript Python and related frameworksBuild APIdriven microservices and integrations connecting applications data sources and downstream systemsDeploy services using containerized applications where appropriateCollaborate with product application data and cloud engineers to define schemas prompts APIs SDKs tools and reusable componentsProvide technical guidance through design reviews and implementation patternsSupport deployment processes observability diagnostics monitoring and quality controlsResolve integration reliability and performance issuesContribute documentation examples and reusable patterns that accelerate adoption of AI and documentprocessing capabilitiesThis is a senior individual contributor role for a handson developer who can independently deliver complex backend systems influence technical direction and help teams adopt reliable AI documentprocessing and data capabilitiesWhat Success Looks Like First 612 MonthsTeams can easily use AI agent RAG documentprocessing ETL and integration capabilitiesDocument ingestion storage transformation and workflow processing are resilient and observableEngineers adopt reusable capabilities and integration patterns with minimal effortSchemas prompts APIs and data contracts are consistently documented and usedWorkflow and integration defects are reducedYou are recognized as a trusted contributor who converts AI and data capabilities into reliable product features while improving maintainabilityMinimum QualificationsBachelors degree in Computer Science Engineering related field or equivalent experience5 years of software engineering experience delivering backend services or dataintensive applications in productionFamiliarity with AIenabled application patterns including RAG promptdriven workflows LLM integrations or agentbased automationStrong experience building backend services using TypeScript andor PythonExperience designing APIs and microservicesAbility to solve ambiguous technical problems and deliver maintainable solutions independentlyFamiliarity with Docker and containerized applicationsExperience with cloudbased systems and integrationsAbility to collaborate across application data cloud and integration teamsFamiliarity with Gitbased development workflowsPreferred QualificationsExperience with document management storage or contentprocessing systemsHandson experience with RAG vector search embeddings ETL document parsing metadata extraction or content enrichmentExperience improving AI reliability through evaluations guardrails grounding strategies structured outputs or observabilityExposure to workflow orchestration document lifecycle management or integration architecturesExperience with eventdriven batch or streaming data processingFamiliarity operating microservices in cloud environmentsUnderstanding of distributed application architectures and integration tradeoffsExperience supporting production systems using logging monitoring and diagnosticsInterest in improving developer experience through reusable examples patterns and lightweight toolingOther DetailsVariable Compensation: This position includes a bonus or variable payout component based on individual and organizational performance.
