DescriptionHaverford College Seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of Visual Studies (One-Year Appointment).The Visual Studies Program at Haverford College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor position for Academic Year 2026-27. We seek an artist/filmmaker/scholar who can teach courses in experimental filmmaking and film/media theory, and who may also contribute electives in areas such as performance, conceptual art, exhibition practice, interactive media, the ethics of AI in digital media culture, or other interdisciplinary approaches to visual culture.This position replaces a faculty member on sabbatical and carries a 5-course teaching load across the year (e.g., 3-2) with no service expectations. The appointment begins July 1, 2026, with classes starting on August 31, 2026.About the PositionThe successful candidate will teach a mix of production and theory courses, potentially including:Foundations of FilmmakingExperimental or essay film productionTopics courses in visual studies, contemporary art, or aestheticsElectives reflecting the candidate's own practice We are especially interested in candidates who approach film as a critical and experimental medium and who can work with students across disciplines in a small liberal arts college environment. The program's learning goals include:Interdisciplinary Rigor: how different disciplines account for seeing, meaning, and representationVisual Literacy: "slow" looking and close analysis of images and mediaThe Ethics of the Visual: the social and political stakes of image cultureCritical Making: artistic practice as a form of inquiryHaverford and Bryn Mawr students come to the Visual Studies Program from a variety of disciplines. They minor in either Visual Studies or Visual Studies (Filmmaking Focus). QualificationsRequired:MFA or PhD in film, media studies, visual studies, art, or a related field by start dateDemonstrated excellence in teaching film/media production and/or theoryA record of creative or scholarly work in experimental film, video art, essay film, or related practicesPreferred: Experience teaching interdisciplinary or practice-based coursesFacility with small-crew or solo filmmaking workflows (digital cinema cameras, sound recording, editing platforms such as Adobe Creative Cloud)Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and mentoring students in the setting of a small liberal arts college.Application ProcessAll application materials must be submitted via Interfolio:Cover letter describing teaching interests and fit with the positionCVTeaching statementSample syllabi (one production course and one theory course, broadly construed)A single PDF with links to scholarly work and links to no more than 10 minutes of creative work.Names and contact information for three references.
