Commitment: Volunteer (flexible hours)Location: RemoteAbout Project PetalsProject Petals is an environmental, climate, and community development nonprofit organization providing environmental education, resources, and services for under resourced communities.Role OverviewProject Petals is seeking a PR & Communications Volunteer to support our Earth Month and external communications and media outreach efforts. This role is ideal for someone interested in public relations, journalism, communications, or advocacy who wants hands-on experience crafting stories, pitching media, and shaping campaigns for a cause-driven organization.Key ResponsibilitiesDraft and edit press releases, media advisories, and announcementsResearch and develop media lists and identify relevant journalists, outlets, and platformsPitch stories, op-eds, and thought leadership pieces to local and national mediaSupport the planning and execution of communications and awareness campaignsCreate pitches around awareness months or fundraising campaignsHelp refine key messages, talking points, and organizational narrativesTrack media coverage and support reporting on outreach effortsResearch and identify relevant conferences, panels, summits, and speaking opportunities aligned with Project Petals' missionDraft and submit speaker applications, panel proposals, and conference pitchesPitch Project Petals leadership for keynote talks, panels, webinars, and workshopsTrack awards deadlines, submissions, and outcomesSupport preparation of speaker bios, talking points, and presentation abstractsCollaborate with the Project Petals team to ensure consistent and mission-aligned messagingQualificationsStrong written and verbal communication skillsInterest in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, or advocacyAbility to write clearly, persuasively, and with attention to tone and audienceOrganized, proactive, and comfortable working independentlyFamiliarity with media pitching, press releases, or op-eds is a plus (but not required)Passion for mission-driven or community-focused workWhat You'll GainHands-on experience in PR and strategic communicationsPortfolio-worthy writing samples (press releases, pitches, op-eds)Insight into nonprofit communications and campaign strategyMentorship and collaboration with a passionate, mission-driven teamThe opportunity to help shape and amplify meaningful stories that matter
