Sign Language Interpreter in Houston, TX
Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
Provide sign language interpretation services for an 8th-grade student in a behavioral classroom setting at a middle school in Houston, TX. This role focuses on instructional times only, averaging approximately 6.5 hours per day, excluding lunch and arrival/dismissal periods. The student uses Cochlear implants, hearing aids, and an assistive listening device, requiring effective communication support as they adjust following re-entry from a Residential Day School Program.
Responsibilities:
Deliver high-quality American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation during instructional times.
Facilitate communication between the student, educators, and peers to support learning and behavioral goals.
Adapt interpretation techniques to accommodate the students unique communication needs, given their use of Cochlear implants and hearing devices.
Collaborate with teachers and support staff to ensure smooth communication and instructional flow.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all educational settings.
Qualifications:
Must hold at least one of the four nationally recognized Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) certifications.
Experience working with middle school students, particularly in special education or behavioral settings, is preferred.
Strong skills in ASL with the ability to interpret effectively for students with hearing loss and additional communication devices.
Ability to work onsite in Houston, TX, with flexibility to accommodate instructional schedules.
Job Details:
Location: Houston, TX (Middle School)
Schedule: Approximately 32.5 hours per week during instructional periods.
Duration: Contract position through the remainder of the current school year, summer, and next school year as needed.
Students served require compensatory services in addition to standard educational support.
