Controller
The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, and audit functions of the organization. This role ensures the integrity of financial data, supports strategic decision-making, and maintains compliance with all regulatory requirements.Reporting to the CEO, the Controller leads the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial statements, manages the annual audit process, and oversees day-to-day accounting functions, including Accounts Payable and cash receipts. The Controller also partners cross-functionally with Human Resources and Development to support organizational goals.As a member of the Leadership Team, the Controller actively contributes to organizational planning and strategy. Regular attendance and participation are required at Finance & Investment Committee, Executive Committee, and Board of Trustees meetings.Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Leadership & Reporting· Lead the preparation of accurate, timely monthly and quarterly accrual-based financial statements.· Analyze financial results and provide insights and recommendations to the CEO and leadership team.· Oversee the general ledger, ensuring accurate journal entries, reconciliations, and financial data.· Prepare and present financial reports to the Board of Trustees and committee meetings.· Develop and improve financial reporting processes, systems, and internal controls.· Produce department-level financial reports to support budget management and decision-making.· Maintain fixed asset schedules and oversee capital asset accounting.· Partner with the CEO to develop and manage the annual operating budget.· Oversee tracking and reporting of endowment funds, restricted contributions, and grantsAudit & Internal Controls· Lead all aspects of the annual financial audit including auditor communication.· Ensure strong internal controls and compliance with accounting standards and policies.· Review audited financial statements and tax filings prepared by external auditors.· Support retirement plan audit in partnership with Human Resources.Tax & Regulatory Compliance· Ensure timely and accurate preparation and filing of all required tax and regulatory reports, including:· State sales tax filings· Sales tax reimbursement filings· Annual escheat reporting· IRS Form 1099 reporting· Property tax filings· Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations.Team Leadership & Operations· Supervise and develop the Accounts Payable & Cash Receipts Specialist.· Provide guidance on invoice coding, financial processes, and accounting best practices.· Oversee daily cash management and monitor banking activity.· Ensure timely completion of all monthly close processes, including balance sheet reconciliations.Cross-Functional Collaboration· Partner with HR to review payroll, benefits reconciliation, W-2s, and retirement plan compliance.· Support Workers’ Compensation and retirement plan audits.· Collaborate with Development to provide financial reporting for grants and restricted funding.· Assist with financial data management in Altru and other systems as needed.Qualifications· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, related field or relevant experience.· Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibility.· Demonstrated experience in nonprofit accounting and fund accounting a plus.· Experience managing audits and working with external auditors.· Familiarity with Form 990 and nonprofit regulatory requirements.· Proficiency in accounting systems (Financial Edge experience strongly preferred).· Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.· High level of integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to the organization’s mission.· Establish and maintain strong working relationships with the Board of Trustees.· Must be available to work on-site five days per week to support operational needs.$75,000 Annual SalaryFull Time with Benefits Medical, Dental, Vision.
