The City of Chesapeake's Public Works Operations team is looking for motivated, hands-on professionals to help deliver essential services that keep our city running smoothly - from roads and bridges to stormwater and drainage systems.As a key member of our operations crew, you'll take on a variety of critical tasks, including:Constructing and repairing concrete features like sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveway aprons, drainage basins, and pipe systemsPerforming roadway maintenance, including pothole patching, shoulder restoration, and other repair workMaintaining and restoring drainage infrastructure, from clearing and grading ditches to embankment and site restorationProviding traffic control and flagging during construction activitiesSupporting tasks like guardrail repair, weed control, and basic tree trimmingOperating a wide range of heavy equipment and tools, including dump trucks, excavators, asphalt and concrete trucks, rollers, snowplows, chainsaws, and mowersResponding to emergency events like snowstorms and hurricanes to help keep roads safe and clearParticipating in ongoing training to sharpen your skills and grow your career in public works If you're hardworking, team-minded, and ready to make a real difference-we want to hear from you!Be part of the Chesapeake team that builds, maintains, and protects the city we all call home.Applicants should possess the ability to use hand tools for general labor, have a basic understanding of construction practices and tools, and be willing to learn and perform flagging duties as well as operate construction equipment - all while following established safety procedures.New team members may be assigned to one of three operational locations based on departmental needs:Greenbrier Yard - 925 Executive Blvd.Hickory Yard - 149 Benefit Rd.Bowers Hill Yard - 3900 S Military Hwy. A Commercial Driver's License ( CDL ) permit is required at the time of interview, with the expectation of obtaining a CDL Class B within six months of hire. High School diploma, GED / HSE , or specialized vocational training is preferred.SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards .Requires CDL permit at time of interview and a CDL Class B within 6 months of employment.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this class requires a minimum of three months of related, full-time equivalent experience.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :Performance of essential functions may require exposure to confined spaces. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.Preferred Qualifications
