Early Childhood Special Education Consultant (Multiple Positions)

Des Moines Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the 26-27 school year to serve as an Early Childhood Special Education Consultant. This position will start in August 2026. Any teacher with 4 years of teaching experience and 2 years of special education experience are encouraged to apply. Please note: The posted salary is drawn from the 25-26 Salary Schedule as the 26-27 Salary Schedule is not yet final. This position also includes a $3,538 SPED Consultant Stipend that is not included in the posted salary range.TITLE: Special Education ConsultantPOSTION TYPE: TCHRHIRING SPECIFICATIONS:Required:Valid Iowa Teaching license with Special Education Consultant endorsement or willingness to obtain.Four years of teaching experience with at least two years of teaching in special educationDesired:Five years of successful teaching experience.Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:Exceptional communication skills.Effective interpersonal and collaborative skills.BASIC FUNCTION:Provide ongoing support to special and general education instructional personneldelivering services to eligible individuals. Participate in the identification process and program planning of eligible individuals to attain the least restrictive environment.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Assist in the identification of children in need of special education services.Support and model the use of appropriate instructional strategies, progress monitoring, and using data to make sound instructional decisions.Provide ongoing support to regular and special education teachers with specific materials and techniques to remediate and/or accommodate individual learning and behavioral differences.Participate in IEP meetings and parent conferences to help determine appropriate programming.Provide input on effectiveness of instructional programs and communicate needs and recommendations to directors.Provide professional development to special education teachers and other school staff.Assist in developing and maintaining coordination and collaboration of services with community agencies.Provide assistance in classroom management and behavioral intervention.Operate within a multi-disciplinary service delivery model.Keep current with special education law, teaching strategies, and best practices in the field of special education.Demonstrate consistent progress on meeting the eight Iowa Teaching Standards.ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position):Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.Maintain confidentiality.Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.Assist with other duties as may be assigned.DEPARTMENT: Student and Family ServicesREPORTS TO: Director of Student ServicesRECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Executive Director of Student and Family ServicesEVALUATES: N/ABARGAINING GROUP: DMEAFLSA STATUS: ExemptFT/PT: Full Time DAYS: 195or 199 day contract HOURS: 7.75PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Standing, walking, sitting, bending/stooping, reaching/pushing/pulling, lifting carryingWORKING CONDITIONS: Mostly indoorsAll of the above duties and responsibilities are essential job functions subject to reasonable accommodation.
