Ambulatory Care Registered Nurse-Neurosurgery

The University of Maryland Department of Neurosurgery is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to work alongside physicians and advanced practice providers to manage the clinical coordination and patient care of neurosurgery patients in the outpatient setting. This role allows for growth and development with potential for transition into a Clinical Nurse Coordinator role Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm Utilize a collaborative process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide excellent patient care and positive patient outcomes. Serve as a patient advocate in the interdisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of quality, evidence based, and cost-effective patient centered healthcare. Essential Functions: Appropriately triage new or existing patient questions and concerns based around nursing knowledge, patient assessment, and clinical judgment Establish and implement individualized plans of care for each patient. Reevaluate and revise POC and clinical actions as necessary Safely provide hands on patient care when needed. Most often, but not limited to, postoperative wound checks including suture and staple removal Provide patient education at each phase of interaction: initial consultations, routine visits, follow up visits, wound checks, post discharge or follow up phone calls etc. Make sure the patient and/or patients’ support system fully understand the POC moving forward and know how to contact our office and who to ask for should they have any questions or concerns Collaborate with all members of the care team to effectively manage patient care throughout the continuum of the outpatient setting: Communication with inpatient team to facilitate post discharge needs and appointments Communicate with administrative assistant to coordinate patients’ upcoming appts, imaging or other diagnostic studies, surgeries, referrals, etc. Patient follow up post discharge to ensure seamless transition back into the outpatient setting; making sure they fully understand all post-surgical and post discharge instructions including wound care, medication administration, and follow up Facilitate patient appointments with providers in other departments when appropriate and necessary; care of a patient does not stop beyond our department Recognize when a patient requires additional support, information, or resources. Refer appropriately to optimize health outcomes Attend interdisciplinary meetings to gather recommendations from other specialist surrounding complicated cases to facilitate optimal patient outcomes in an efficient manner Participate in the identification of clinical, operational, and safety related performance improvement opportunities Complete all required training and competencies in a timely fashion. Act in accordance with all FPI rules and regulations Exhibit knowledge surrounding neurosciences/ neurosurgery, nursing theory, pharmacology, anatomy/ physiology and apply accordingly Continue to expand knowledge base through clinical practice, peer support, and independent study Implement decisions surrounding patient care based on up to date best practices and nursing judgment Embrace FPI’s Service Excellence Behaviors Service: Model effective customer relations skills and behaviors, anticipate customer needs, provide a proactive and timely response Professionalism: Demonstrate integrity, accountability, honesty, and dependability in actions. Provide and build team morale by promoting positive attitudes toward ones work and work environment Daily Functions: Complete daily check-in with assigned neurosurgeon, advanced practice providers and administrative assistant (utilizing Outlook email and calendar as well as the daily census sheet) to clarify goals and objectives for the day Prioritize tasks and patient care using best practice and nursing judgment Delegate tasks when appropriate and necessary Consistently evaluate patient care and working environments to ensure they are clean and safe for use at all times. Ensure there is adequate supplies to preform job duties Provide clear, objective documentation in the electronic medical record Maintain HIPAA and patient privacy EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's Degree Current Maryland licensure or eligibility to obtain Maryland licensure Excellent customer service and communication skills Two to three years of clinical experience (at least 1 year of neurosurgical experience preferred) CPR certification is required In the Fall of 2021, FPI will require all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
