Product Manager — Legal Technology Infrastructure

OVERVIEW:The D. E. Shaw group seeks a product manager to join its new Legal Technology team and own the infrastructure that determines how legal documents and metadata are stored, organized, and accessed. This team is focused on transforming how the firm’s attorneys work with documents and creating the infrastructure needed for AI-powered capabilities. The role offers a greenfield, high-impact opportunity to work at the intersection of platform strategy, document systems, and legal operations, with exposure to complex, business-critical challenges and close partnership with legal, engineering, and product stakeholders across the firm.WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY: Define and drive the infrastructure product roadmap for Legal Technology, with a focus on document storage, metadata architecture, and scalable information access across the department. Partner with legal, product, and engineering clients to identify pain points, clarify priorities, and translate business needs into infrastructure requirements. Design infrastructure that supports the retrieval patterns attorneys require—semantic search, deterministic clause retrieval, and relational metadata—and work closely with AI engineers to evaluate where each approach is best suited. Drive initiatives through the full product lifecycle, from discovery and prioritization through launch and iteration. Bring structure to complex, cross-functional efforts by defining scope, dependencies, and success metrics. WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR: A bachelor’s degree or higher and five to ten years of relevant product management experience. Experience working on platform, infrastructure, data, search, content management, or document-centric products is strongly preferred. Familiarity with storage systems, information architecture, metadata modeling, retrieval systems, or related technical areas is a plus. Experience partnering closely with software developers on technically complex products. Exposure to AI-enabled product capabilities, including semantic search, knowledge retrieval, or document processing pipelines, is helpful but not required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to solve open-ended problems. The expected annual base salary for this position is $175,000 to $250,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401(k) contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.
