Job Title: Superintendent – Ground-Up Commercial ConstructionJob SummaryThe Superintendent is responsible for overall field operations on ground-up commercial construction projects, from sitework through building completion. This role leads all on-site activities, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards. The Superintendent is the primary field authority and works closely with the Project Manager to coordinate all phases of construction.Key ResponsibilitiesOversee all field operations for ground-up commercial projects, including sitework, structural, and building systems installationManage subcontractors, field staff, and daily construction activities from mobilization through closeoutDevelop, maintain, and enforce project schedules, including detailed look-ahead schedulesCoordinate site logistics, including staging, deliveries, equipment, and site accessLead daily safety meetings and enforce OSHA and company safety standardsEnsure all work complies with project plans, specifications, and local building codesCoordinate inspections, testing, and interactions with local authoritiesIdentify and resolve field issues, conflicts, and delays proactivelyMaintain quality control throughout all phases of constructionConduct regular coordination meetings with subcontractors and project stakeholdersManage punch list, commissioning, and final project closeoutMaintain daily reports, site logs, and documentationRequired QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred)7–15+ years of experience in commercial construction, including ground-up projectsProven experience as a Superintendent on large-scale commercial developments (e.g., office, industrial, retail, healthcare)Strong knowledge of all construction phases: sitework, foundations, structural systems (steel/concrete), building envelope, and MEP systemsAbility to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedulesTechnical SkillsExperience with construction management software (e.g., Procore, Autodesk Build)Ability to manage and update construction schedules (Primavera P6 or MS Project preferred)Strong understanding of sequencing and coordination across multiple tradesFamiliarity with Houston-area permitting, inspections, and code requirementsCore CompetenciesStrong field leadership and team managementExcellent organizational and scheduling skillsProactive problem-solving and decision-makingClear communication with subcontractors, inspectors, and project teamsHigh standards for safety, quality, and accountabilityPreferred CertificationsOSHA 30 CertificationFirst Aid / CPR CertificationLEED accreditation (a plus for sustainable projects)Work EnvironmentPrimarily field-based on active construction sitesExposure to varying weather conditions and outdoor environmentsMay require extended hours, including early mornings or weekends, depending on project scheduleCompensation (Houston Market)Typically $110,000 – $140,000+ annuallyLarge-project or Senior Superintendents can exceed $150,000+Bonuses, per diem (if traveling), and vehicle allowances commonly includedTypical EmployersCommercial general contractorsDesign-build firmsReal estate developersEPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) firmsKey Difference vs. Interiors SuperintendentGreater focus on sitework, structural systems, and full building lifecycleLonger project durations and larger crewsMore complex coordination across trades and construction phases
