Principal Software Engineer, AWS Lambda

Overview As a Principal Engineer on the Lambda Experience team in Dublin, you will set the long-term technical vision for the Lambda execution environment. You will shape architecture for the microVM-based, multi-tenant system that runs customer code with low latency and strong isolation. You’ll contribute hands-on code in Rust and C while guiding cross-team alignment and engineering culture. This role combines systems programming, virtualization, and cloud infrastructure to enable next‑gen workloads and scale Lambda globally. You’ll mentor senior engineers and drive strategic initiatives that impact how serverless compute evolves at AWS. ResponsibilitiesDefine and drive the long-term technical strategy for the Lambda execution environmentArchitect and build systems for execution environment management, cold start optimization, and resource scheduling at massive scaleWrite production code in Rust and C within critical components of the execution environmentLead design and evolution of microVM orchestration with Firecracker and Linux kernel interfacesDrive cross-team technical alignment with Lambda and adjacent AWS Serverless/Compute teamsMentor and develop senior engineers, fostering strategic thinking and organizational impactEstablish engineering standards, lead design reviews, and promote operational excellenceRepresent the Lambda Experience team in senior technical forums across AWS Key requirementsBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent experienceExperience with virtualization (Hypervisors, VMware, Xen) or software developmentExperience providing technical leadership on high-impact cross-functional technical project12+ years of professional software development with depth in systems programmingDeep knowledge of Linux kernel internals (scheduling, memory management, namespaces/cgroups)Strong communication with executives and technical leadersMentorship and coaching of engineersStrategic thinking and influence across teamsRust and C programmingLinux kernel internals (scheduling, memory management, namespaces/cgroups)Virtualization and hypervisor concepts
