Birmingham, AL, United States or Atlanta, GA, United StatesJob DescriptionSenior Tax Accountant - Corporate Income TaxJob SummaryThe Senior Accountant position is an integral member of the Southern Company Income Tax Reporting and Forecasting Team. This position is primarily responsible for performing and reviewing detailed tax accounting computations, reviewing and analyzing tax provisions, preparing tax forecasts, and coordinating with internal/external stakeholders. This role will primarily focus on Alabama Power income taxes and taxes other while occasionally assisting with the income tax accounting and forecasting for the other regulated electric operating companies.Major Job ResponsibilitiesProvide accounting support to department in the Income Tax Reporting and Forecasting area, which includes monthly closing processes, journal entries, analysis and support of all income tax accountsPrepare monthly financial reports for internal and external reporting that summarize various income tax balancesPerform and assist with the review of quarterly and monthly account reconciliations, tax analytics, and variance explanationsPlan, prioritize and lead ad hoc projects outside normal recurring tasksIdentify information gaps and data flow problems that impact income taxes and recommend and coordinate solutions for process improvements and efficienciesCommunicate complex income tax accounting impacts and issues with various levels of management. Collaborate with co-workers outside the SCS Tax Team to ensure overcommunication of critical issues that may involve taxProvide tax guidance or advice to both accounting and non-accounting co-workers to solve complex accounting issuesDocument/update income tax processes Actively engage in knowledge transfer, job training, and assisting less experienced members of the team and organizationCoordinate, develop, and review responses to information requests from internal customers, PSC, FERC, and internal and external auditorsPrepare and develop various data requests, and other documents as needed for taxes other than income taxes including but not limited to payroll and property taxes, business licenses and other utility specific fees and payments. Assist with forecasting deferred income taxes for budget submissions Develop and manage relationships and communications between the Tax Accounting department and its stakeholders- Financial Reporting; Financial Planning; Tax Compliance; Accounting Research; Regulatory; Wholesale; Property; and external customersEducation And ExperienceBachelor’s degree in accounting requiredMinimum of 5 years of ASC 740 tax accounting and provision experience requiredStrong technical skills preparing Effective Tax Rate Reconciliations, FIN 48 recognition and measurement disclosures, New Account Analysis and Valuation Allowance preferredRecent SEC reporting and audit support experience preferred CPA preferredLeadership experience preferredPublic accounting experience a plusRegulatory accounting experience and knowledge of ASC 980 a plus Experience with accounting systems (i.e., Oracle ERP and Advanced Excel) desired, and experience with UI Financial Planner and PowerPlan Tax Provision is a plusSkills & AbilitiesGood organizational skillsStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsAbility to make decisions and perform in a timely manner with minimal supervision Good verbal and written communications skillsAbility to identify and implement process improvementsStrong interpersonal skills: ability to collaborate well with people at various levelsAble to communicate complex, technical tax issues in a clear manner to both tax professionals and those not familiar with tax accountingAbout Southern CompanySouthern Company (NYSE: SO ) is a leading energy provider serving 9 million customers across the Southeast and beyond through its family of companies.
