The unit specializes in neuro-intensive care with a focus on acute stroke management, neurosurgical patients, and critical care conditions. Patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, subdural hematomas, craniotomies, carotid interventions, aneurysm procedures, seizures, and other neurological emergencies. The role requires strong neuro critical care experience and comfort with specialized equipment including external ventricular drains, lumbar drains, ICP monitoring devices, and continuous hemodynamic monitoring. Nursing ratios are 2:1 with possible flexibility to 3:1 during high census periods; average daily census is 11-12 patients. The unit specializes in neurosurgical and stroke patient care with an average daily census of 11–12 patients. The facility is a comprehensive stroke center with patient diagnoses including strokes (ischemic, hemorrhagic/subarachnoid hemorrhage), subdural hematomas (SDH), craniotomies, carotid stents, carotid endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, and depth electrodes for monitoring myasthenia gravis. Advanced monitoring capabilities include ICP monitoring devices (Camino, LICOX), continuous hemodynamic monitoring (NICOM), and temperature management systems (Arctic Sun).
