About The PositionThe Senior Research Scientist (Pre-clinical) serves as a scientific lead for pre-clinical research projects at the Uniformed Services University (USU) Center for Biotechnology (4DBio3), providing technical and management support and overseeing project execution. In addition, the Senior Research Scientist (Pre-clinical) will bring critical subject matter expertise to 4DBio3 and assist in coordinating the efforts of a multi-disciplinary team of government and contract researchers, academic experts and consumers, all in support of the 4DBio3 mission. Among other projects, the Senior Research Scientist (Pre-clinical) will play a key leadership role on 4DBio3's blood research portfolio that includes the On-Demand Blood project which is focused on developing the scientific understanding and bioengineering solutions to manufacture and/or optimize a full range of human blood products for use in austere environments.This position is 100% onsite at the Uniformed Services University Offsite 4DBio3 Laboratory in Rockville, MD. A thorough government background check will be administered. The 4DBio3 Center promotes the development and application of advanced biotechnologies and services within the DoD to enhance the readiness, health, and well-being of America's Warfighters, veterans, and families today. Potential for a faculty appointment at USUHS, commensurate with experience, for qualified applicantsSalary Range$135,000 - $155,000. Salaries are determined based on several factors including external market data, internal equity, and the candidate's related knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.This position is based in a university academic setting and involves working within a laboratory environment. It offers a great opportunity to engage and collaborate with fellow scientists and researchers.QualificationsPh.D. in a relevant field (e.g., biology, pathology, biochemistry, bioengineering, molecular and cell biology, or genetics) required3-5 years' experience with planning and management of innovative medical and/or scientific research programsMinimum 8 years direct experience in hematopoiesis research such as cell culture and differentiation of stem cells and/or synthetic blood substitutesExperience with multi-color flow cytometry and cell sortingExperience with blood cell function assaysExperience with gene editing and molecular biology techniquesAbility to design and execute in vitro experimentsKnowledge of red blood cell alternatives preferredExperience in blood cell storage and freezing preferredExperience with scale up cultures in bioreactors preferredExperience and success in writing and receiving federal research grants, cooperative agreements, and/or contractsExperience working in DoD or other Federal research environmentsExperience supervising research personnelAbility to exercise independent judgment in fast-paced, high-pressure environment with strict deadlines, and to manage multiple projects simultaneouslyAbility to work with senior leaders to help advise on upcoming projects and scientific initiativesAbility to perform analyses of research portfolios to identify critical gaps, exceptional results and/or lack of progressKnowledge and experience with Department of Defense (DoD) Grants and Agreements administration and management, preferredResponsibilitiesPerform recurring analyses on research portfolios to identify critical gaps, exceptional results and/or lack of progressAssist in the preparation of SOPs and analysis of laboratory experimentsPrepare interim and final progress reportsEnsure research integrityDisseminate research resultsProvide guidance to scientists preparing research proposals, to include guidance on research protocol development, as neededMaintain open communication with Principal Investigators and Center Leadership, advises of processes, reports progress, and serves as a point of contact, as applicablePerform scientific reviews on research proposals submitted for consideration, as requestedDirect multifunctional teams and provides scientific domain expertise as neededAdhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and infection control procedures, as applicableMaintain and update files of all applicable regulatory documentation for IACUC or IRB (including protocols, approvals, amendments, modifications, etc.) as well as any communications with the sponsor or any other Federal or regulatory office (including prior approvals, change in scope, etc.), as needed Management ResponsibilitiesAbility to provide strong leadership for diverse research teamsAbility to supervise the work of laboratory personnel in the performance of experiments, data collection, analysis and reports, as applicable
