Tax Analyst - Non-Profit Tax Compliance

We are seeking an experienced Nonprofit Tax Analyst with strong expertise in IRS Form 990 series filings and tax-exempt organization compliance.This role is ideal for:A CPA or EA with nonprofit tax experienceA senior tax associate with deep Form 990 exposureA former IRS professional (especially from the Exempt Organizations division)A nonprofit tax specialist looking to move into a product-focused environmentAs a key subject matter expert for Tax990, you will work cross-functionally with product, engineering, and customer success teams to ensure our software reflects current IRS regulations, supports accurate filings, and delivers exceptional value to nonprofit organizations.WHAT YOU’LL DOTax Compliance & AdvisoryServe as internal subject matter expert on Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, 990-N, and related schedules (A–R)Interpret IRS instructions, revenue rulings, and regulatory updates affecting exempt organizationsProvide guidance on IRC Section 501(c) compliance requirementsAdvise on public support tests, filing thresholds, and Unrelated Business Income Tax (Form 990-T)Monitor IRS rule changes and ensure timely implementation within the platformServe as escalation point for complex customer tax questionsProduct & Technical CollaborationPartner with engineering and product teams to translate tax regulations into system logicReview and validate form calculations, worksheets, diagnostics, and schedulesTest annual form updates and new features before releaseEnsure platform compliance with IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) requirements and rejection codesDocument tax rules, edge cases, and technical requirements for implementationIdentify user experience improvements grounded in tax compliance standardsCustomer Success & EducationAssist CPAs, nonprofit treasurers, and tax professionals with advanced filing questionsCreate educational resources (guides, FAQs, webinars, training materials)Train customer support teams on tax law updates and filing requirementsConduct quality assurance reviews of complex filings when neededQuality Assurance & Risk MitigationReview software-generated returns for regulatory accuracyValidate automated calculations and compliance safeguardsIdentify, document, and escalate compliance risks or software issuesSupport annual form release cycles and regulatory transitionsREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSEducation & CredentialsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related fieldCPA or EA strongly preferred (or working toward certification)Experience3+ years of hands-on experience preparing or reviewing Form 990 series returnsDemonstrated expertise in nonprofit tax complianceStrong knowledge of exempt organization rules under IRC Section 501(c)Experience in public accounting, nonprofit finance, IRS, or tax software environmentTechnical & Knowledge RequirementsStrong working knowledge of:Form 990 and Schedules A–RForm 990-EZ requirements and thresholdsForm 990-PF (private foundations)Public support calculationsForm 990-T (Unrelated Business Income Tax)IRS e-file specifications and rejection handlingTax preparation software and e-filing systemsExcel for validation and analysisExperience with JIRA, Confluence, or similar tools is a plus.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS5+ years of nonprofit tax experienceFormer IRS Exempt Organizations experienceExperience in tax software development or testingKnowledge of state nonprofit filing requirementsExperience mentoring or training other tax professionalsBackground in both public accounting and nonprofit environmentsWHAT MAKES YOU SUCCESSFULDetail-oriented with strong compliance instinctsAnalyticala thinker who enjoys solving complex tax scenariosStrong communicator who can translate technical rules into clear guidanceComfortable collaborating with engineers and product teamsCustomer-focused and service-mindedSelf-starter who takes ownership and stays current on tax law changes
