Architectural, Engineering, and Related ServicesResidential Building ConstructionNonresidential Building ConstructionJustice, Public Order, and Safety ActivitiesOther Specialty Trade ContractorsSalary: $52.61 - $58.07 HourlyLocation : Hutto, TXJob Type: Full TimeDepartment: Development ServicesOpening Date: 05/06/2026Closing Date: 6/5/2026 11:59 PM CentralFLSA: ExemptPosition OverviewUnder direction from the Development Services Director, the Building Official implements, manages and administers building and inspections operations within the Department.Essential DutiesServes as the chief building official for the city overseeing, implementing, and enforcing applicable codes and ordinances relating to development; monitors and manages all work-related issues or concerns; provides guidance and advice to clerical, administrative and upper managerial staff; ensures adherence to standard building codes, ordinances, and regulations.Performs technical and administrative duties in enforcing construction and building codes to ensure public safety and health; collaborates and oversees the work of third-party building inspectors performing onsite inspections for new construction, additions, and alternations; ensures compliance with all current codes.Performs plan review of simple to complex building projects.Performs skilled inspection work as needed to ensure compliance with federal state and local regulations and codes.Works with applicants, owners, contractors, consultants, and service providers intake, process, review, and approve or make recommendations regarding various requests for permit approvals or services.Develops and mentors subordinate staff. Assists staff with technical expertise and use of discretion during inspections and plan review proceduresReviews, evaluates, and checks the accuracy of building plans and specifications; performs technical duties to enforce construction codes; approves building permit applications, calculates fees, and ensures the timely collection of fees; oversees permit and certificate of occupancy issuances.Responds to public inquiries relating to building codes, design, permitting procedures and construction practices and compliance; promotes building and public safety initiatives through partnership with other city departments.Ensures the city plan review, inspection and permit process is operating in accordance with best industry practices; attends meetings, tracks project progress, prepares reports, and advises the director on problems, needs, opportunities and changing requirements, and remain up to date on the current codes, laws, regulations, and changes.Serves as an "essential employee" and may be required to be available outside of normal office hours, for manmade or natural disasters or other events the Mayor or Director deems necessary.Serves as City's liaison to the Building and Standards Commission; Attends various meetings, including staff, City Council, and pre-development meetings as necessary.Reviews and recommends ordinances for building, electrical, plumbing, gas and fire codes.Investigates complaints of unsafe, uninhabited, and unsanitary structures and enforces codes when necessary.Maintains current knowledge of various building code technical specifications, procedures and policies.Conducts required inspections during building condemnation procedures.Performs other duties as assigned.Education, Certification & ExperienceMINIMUM REQUIREMENTSHigh School Diploma or equivalent required.Must possess a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.Five (5) years of experience in the building industry with combination building inspection experience with a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or leadership.Certification as a Certified Building Official issued by the International Code Council (ICC) preferred or must be obtained within one (1) year.State of Texas Plumbing Inspector's License is required.Intermediate Computer skills required.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Structural Engineering, or related field and may be substituted for two additional years of experience.Three (3) years supervisory experience preferred.ICC Combination Plans Examiner Certification, ICC Commercial Energy Inspector Certification, ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner Certification, and Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner certifications preferred.Principles of Customer Service & DisclaimerCORE VALUESThis position requires an individual to align with and maintain the standard as set by our organization's Core Values:Integrity- Communicating honestly, being accountable, upholding moral principles, and supporting our organization's valuesCollaboration- Showing teamwork is equally as cherished as individual achievements by celebrating positive outcomes togetherConsistency- Producing an accomplished standard of work in the workplaceServant leadership- Actively listening to exert a positive influenceMutual respect- Valuing opportunity, unique contributions, and each otherForward-thinking- Considering needs, listening to team members, and thinking innovativelyDISCLAIMERThe above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.
