Nursing Manager
Position OverviewThe Nurse Manager for Behavioral Health provides operational, clinical, and administrative leadership for a psychiatric inpatient unit. This role ensures high‑quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and effective interdisciplinary collaboration. The Nurse Manager partners closely with the Director to oversee daily operations, performance improvement initiatives, staffing, and patient flow. This position requires strong leadership experience managing a psychiatric unit within a hospital setting.Key ResponsibilitiesMaintain positive, professional interactions with patients, families, visitors, and staff.Uphold and enforce hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.Oversee daily unit operations in collaboration with the Director; provide 24‑hour operational leadership.Ensure all clinical, ethical, and nursing practice standards are met.Lead interdisciplinary performance improvement initiatives using appropriate benchmarks and quality models.Prepare and analyze clinical data, statistical reports, and regulatory submissions for:NY State Office of Mental Health (OMH)NY Department of Health (DOH)NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)Administration for Children’s Services (ACS)Monitor admissions, discharges, and patient flow to ensure appropriate clinical management and discharge planning.Support compliance efforts for DOH, JCAHO, and other regulatory surveys.Manage budgeting, supply oversight, and inventory control.Ensure staff competencies, training, and clinical readiness.Provide administrative coverage for the Nursing Department as needed.Participate in continuing education to enhance clinical and administrative expertise.Implement innovative, evidence‑based practices in behavioral health care.Support HCAHPS improvement initiatives.Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director or Senior VP of Patient Care Services.Required Skills & ExperienceMinimum 5 years as a Registered Nurse.Minimum 5 years of clinical psychiatric experience.Minimum 2 years in a nursing leadership role.Must have experience managing a psychiatric unit in a hospital.Strong critical thinking, communication, math, and computer skills.Experience working with regulatory bodies: NYSDOH, JCAHO, OMH, DOHMH, ACS.Knowledge of quality improvement models, CQI, and Root Cause Analysis.Demonstrated leadership, administrative, and budget management skills.Strong professionalism, interpersonal skills, and decision‑making ability.Ability to utilize BHMC electronic health record and related systems.Ability to read, write, see, and hear English clearly.Education RequirementsRequired:Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program.Preferred:Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN).Licensure & CertificationsActive, unencumbered RN license in New York State.Basic Life Support (BLS).Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).Crisis Management certification (PMCS, TRUST, or equivalent).Additional Experience (Preferred/Applicable to Certain Units)Experience working with children ages 6 weeks to 6 years (paid or unpaid).Minimum 2 years of formal experience in this area.
