Senior Electrical Engineer – Subject Matter Expert (SME)This role serves as the senior electrical engineering authority within a multidisciplinary team primarily composed of Mechanical Engineers. The position delivers deep technical expertise, supports cross-functional design initiatives, and ensures electrical considerations are fully integrated throughout product development.The Senior Electrical Engineer plays a critical role in requirements evaluation, design direction, test development, and resolving complex technical challenges across programs. This is a highly hands-on, collaborative role and is essential to maintaining electrical engineering excellence in an environment with limited in-house electrical expertise.Essential FunctionsElectrical Technical LeadershipAct as the primary electrical engineering resource, providing expert guidance during design reviews, troubleshooting, and technical discussions. Support Mechanical Engineers by clarifying electrical design intent to ensure proper integration into electro-mechanical systems. Offer high-level technical insight to drive sound engineering decisions across projects. Requirements Analysis & FeasibilityAnalyze customer requirements to assess electrical feasibility, identify risks, and propose alternative solutions when needed. Support quoting and early-stage development by validating assumptions and highlighting potential electrical challenges. Partner with Engineering Management and program teams to ensure alignment between requirements and product capabilities. Electrical Design & IntegrationLead the design and development of electrical systems including circuits, PCBs, flex circuits, wiring, and test fixtures. Apply advanced electrical principles such as transmission line theory, signal integrity, and power analysis to ensure reliable performance. Assess opportunities to adapt or modify existing products to meet new customer needs. Ensure electrical requirements are effectively incorporated into mechanical designs and manufacturing processes. Testing, Validation & DocumentationDevelop and implement comprehensive test procedures (FAT, DVT, qualification) aligned with customer requirements. Support test execution and collaborate with the Test Lab to troubleshoot and interpret results using advanced instrumentation. Create and maintain detailed engineering documentation including schematics, BOMs, compliance matrices, and technical reports. R&D, Troubleshooting & Continuous ImprovementLead research and development efforts to enhance current products and introduce new capabilities based on evolving technologies and customer needs. Serve as a key technical expert during design, build, and testing phases to resolve complex issues. Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for electrical and system-level problems. Identify and drive improvements in product design, processes, and testing methodologies. Cross-Functional SupportProvide electrical engineering support to Manufacturing, Sales, Quality, and customers as required. Assist with production builds, installations, and operational testing to ensure compliance with specifications and regulatory standards. Evaluate manufacturing processes and recommend improvements to enhance reliability and efficiency. Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. 10+ years of experience in electrical design, product development, or similar roles. Strong background in power, analog, digital, and serial communication systems (RS-232/422/485, Ethernet). Electrical Theory & Signal Integrity:Expertise in transmission line behavior (impedance, reactance, phase, coaxial and twisted pair systems). Strong understanding of communications theory including differential signaling, propagation, and digital signal integrity. Proficiency in AC/DC power analysis and EMI/EMC principles, including grounding and shielding techniques. Test & Measurement:Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, VNAs, Kelvin (4-wire) measurement techniques, and Hi-Pot testing (manual and automated). Fiber Optics:Working knowledge of multimode and single-mode fiber, connector types, performance characteristics, and fiber-loss testing. Systems Engineering & Documentation:Ability to interpret requirements, ensure verification and traceability, and produce clear, concise engineering documentation and reports. Test Development:Proven ability to develop requirements-based test procedures, including FAT, DVT, and qualification testing. Design & Integration:Experience working with electro-mechanical systems, integrating electrical designs into mechanical assemblies, and creating/interpreting schematics, BOMs, and compliance matrices. Preferred QualificationsExperience with slip ring or rotary systems. Background working with low-volume, high-complexity custom products. Industry experience in aerospace, defense, industrial, or medical device environments.
