Kitchen Assistant

As an important member of the OHK team, you will assist in providing daily meals, seven days per week, to both clients living on campus in our emergency shelter and transitional housing, as well as to the general public. The Kitchen Staff member will assist both the Lead Cook and Cook in the planning, preparation, presentation, and delivery of nutritious meals served in the OHK. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Cleans, maintains, and organizes the kitchen area, including walk-in cooler and freezer, food preparation and serving areas, as well as personal workspace; Adheres to standards of Open Hand Kitchen including but not limited to: o Attend any required training and adhere to standards to o Maintain sanitation requirements and cleanliness of the OHK o Ensure food is fresh, prepared to standards, handled, and stored correctly o Label and date all prepared foods Work cooperatively with OHK staff, clients, volunteers, and any other visitors to the kitchen Assist Sr. Program Manager and Lead Cook and Cook, as needed, with any deliveries or pickups of food Other duties as assigned Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Experience in a commercial kitchen is preferred Knowledge of safety guidelines and procedures in a commercial kitchen Learn, know, and comply with health department sanitation guidelines and assist in maintaining cleanliness Knowledge and experience working with the unhoused a plus Ability to take initiative and solve problems Excellent organizational, written, and oral skills are a plus Ability to interact effectively and professionally with participants, families, staff, and volunteers Self-motivated and detail-oriented Commitment to the mission and goals of St Vincent de Paul Reporting to this Position: None Education, Qualifications, Certifications, Trainings, Licenses: High School Diploma or equivalent Minimum 1 year experience in a related position/setting Must obtain required certifications within 2 months of employment Must get Hepatitis A vaccination Submit to TB testing annually; Successfully pass any required pre-employment background and drug screening St Vincent de Paul, Louisville (SVDP) is one of the longest serving social charities in Louisville.
