The Cardiothoracic Surgeon performs comprehensive clinical Cardiothoracic Surgery services, such as VATs (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery), Lobectomy, thoracotomy, diaphragm plication, chest wall hernia repair, decortication, pleurectomy, and chest tube management with tPA, as well as other complex Cardiothoracic surgery procedures.
Deliver on-site open-heart cardiothoracic surgery services, including initial patient evaluation in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department settings, performing surgical procedures in the operating room, and providing post-operative care.
Conduct cardiothoracic surgery consults, performing permanent pacemaker implantation, pacemaker lead extraction, pericardial window and/or pericardiectomy procedures, and serving as a backup for interventional cardiology cases.
The Cardiothoracic Surgeon spends an estimated 90% of the time on direct patient care, which includes patient evaluation in both outpatient and inpatient settings, performing surgical procedures, and serving as backup for Cath Lab procedures.
Provide discharge education and follow-up instructions to emergency department patients, coordinating with the next care setting.
The Cardiothoracic Surgeon spends an estimated 10% of the time on activities not directly related to patient care, such as participating in discussions of cases during Cardiac Board meetings and biweekly Surgical Mortality and Morbidity (M&M) meetings, as required for cardiothoracic cases, typically held on Fridays.
