Learn more at www.ampunited.com Position Summary The Painter – Brush & Roll performs coating and preservation tasks on U.S. Navy vessels and industrial facilities, applying paints and preservatives using brushes and rollers to achieve required film thickness, adhesion, and finish quality. Work is performed in accordance with NAVSEA Standard Item 009-32, NSTM S9086-VD-STM-010 Ch-631 (Rev 3), and SSPC / NACE coating standards, as well as OSHA 29 CFR 1915 (shipyard employment) requirements. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Prepare metal surfaces for painting by cleaning, degreasing, abrading, and performing mechanical surface prep using needle guns, grinders, and sanders. Mask and protect adjacent equipment and surfaces prior to painting or coating operations. Mix, blend, and tone coating materials (including catalysts and additives) to specified viscosity and application requirements. Apply primers, intermediate, and finish coats with brush and roller to obtain uniform coverage and film build. Inspect prepared surfaces and applied coatings for defects such as runs, sags, holidays, and incomplete coverage. Work aboard ships, in tanks, voids, bilges, and machinery spaces as required by task order or specification. Apply non-skid, touch-up, and maintenance coatings as directed under supervision of the Coatings Supervisor. Follow NAVSEA and AMP United procedures for paint handling, waste disposal, and environmental protection. Ensure proper use of respiratory protection, ventilation, and containment in all operations. Participate in pre-job briefs, toolbox talks, and post-job reviews to promote safety and quality compliance. Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Proficiency in brush and roller application techniques for various coating systems. Knowledge of surface preparation methods and inspection criteria per SSPC-SP and NACE standards. Understanding of paint mixing, film thickness control, and curing requirements. Familiarity with NAVSEA Standard Item 009-32 and environmental compliance procedures. Ability to read and follow technical work documents (TWDs), job orders, and safety data sheets (SDS). Effective teamwork and communication skills in confined and shipboard environments. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and housekeeping standards. Training and Certification Requirements Painter – Brush & Roll personnel must complete and maintain the following prior to assignment: Hazard Communication Respiratory Protection Fall Protection Confined / Enclosed Space Entry Lead and Chromium (VI) Awareness Lead Paint Remover Certification Fire Watch / Tank Watch Shipyard Mandatory Annual Training First Aid / CPR certification Security and Access Requirements Must be a U.S. Citizen and pass all background, drug, and security checks. Must possess or obtain a Secret Clearance. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED required. Minimum of two (2) years verifiable experience as a marine or industrial painter using brush and roller techniques in a shipyard environment. Experience on U.S. Navy vessels or comparable industrial facilities required, Knowledge of lead, cadmium, and solvent controls in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1915. Training in SSPC / NACE paint application and inspection standards preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to lift 50 lbs and operate hand tools, rollers, and paint equipment for extended periods. Prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and climbing ladders or scaffolds. Must wear required PPE (hard hat, respirator, hearing protection, FR clothing, gloves, safety shoes, and fall protection gear). Must maintain fitness for duty and respirator qualification.
