Legal Assistant
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or its equivalent and either:
A. Five (5) years of full time paid experience as a legal secretary, paralegal assistant or comparable position in a public or private legal office with substantial experience in one or more of the following areas: Administrative Law, Civil Litigation, Estates, Child Support, Paternity, Family Court Litigation or Real Estate; or
B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NY State registered four year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and one year of full time paid experience as described in (a) above; or
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Note: Successful completion of a recognized course of study for Para-legal/Legal Assistant may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the above required experience and/or training.
Examples of Work: (Illustrative only)
Prepares certain standardized legal documents and processes them in a prescribed manner;
Performs legal research for the Wayne County Law Department;
Prepares routine documents and correspondence for attorneys;
Verifies citations in briefs, memos and opinions, rechecks the accuracy of cited cases;
Maintains law library including the indexing and collating of various legal journals and periodicals;
Assists in the preparation for hearings and trials by maintaining trial calendar and scheduling of cases, coordinating conferences, appointment times for witnesses, issuing subpoenas, etc.;
Assists in assembling necessary evidence by obtaining statements from potential witnesses, preparing exhibits, organizing case files, etc.;
Prepares, processes and maintains accident, estate, mortgage liens and other monetary claims;
Assists in the preparation of Records of Appeal;
Conducts title searches in the County Clerk’s Office.
