Technical Specialist, Functional Safety Engineer
Pay for this position: $70-$84/hr. DOE6-7 month contract with high potential of extensions100% onsite in Southfield, MIM-F 40 hours per week potential OTOur client, a EV Manufacture located in Southfieled, MI is seeking a Technical Specialist, Functional Safety Engineer with strong hands-on experience in functional safety engineering within the automotive industry, specifically in the context of ISO 26262 at an OEM or Tier 1 supplier.The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong sense of ownership, a proactive mindset, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-performance environment. This role requires individuals who are eager to learn quickly, drive excellence, and contribute to the continuous improvement of safety-critical automotive systems.ResponsibilitiesLead the development of functional safety system requirements and functional decomposition for automotive systemsReview and approve HARA, Functional Safety Requirements, Technical Safety Requirements, and validation test plansContribute to defining and confirming vehicle architecture from a functional safety perspectiveReview and approve Development Interface Agreements and other functional safety documentation with suppliers and external partnersLead the development of functional safety processes, tools, and methodologiesOversee functional safety readiness activities, metrics, and program trackingLead development of SOTIF requirements for autonomous driving systems and core subsystemsDefine functional safety concepts for systems, hardware, and software in accordance with ISO 26262Collaborate closely with hardware, software, design, and validation teams to ensure compliance with safety requirementsParticipate in safety-driven decision-making at various levels of managementLead hazard analysis and safety concept development in collaboration with cross-functional teamsSupport functional safety validation testing activitiesWork closely with internal teams and suppliers to define functional safety interfaces across project stakeholdersOperate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment with minimal direct oversight while maintaining strong collaboration across teamsQualificationsExtensive, in-depth knowledge of ISO 26262 and proven experience delivering major functional safety work products8+ years of experience as a Functional Safety Engineer or in a related roleAt least 1 year of experience performing SOTIF analysis and developing related work productsDemonstrated success leading functional safety analyses of systems or productsExperience supporting external or third-party functional safety reviewsStrong understanding of OEM and supplier safety responsibility allocation and the ability to communicate technical concepts across all organizational levelsExperience with functional safety tools such as Medini and APIS IQExperience with requirements management tools such as JamaStrong commitment to promoting safety across all levels of hardware and software developmentExcellent written, verbal, and organizational communication skillsPreferred QualificationsExperience working in Agile development environmentsKnowledge of CMMI and Automotive SPICE and their role in product development qualityExperience with embedded system hardware and/or software developmentEducationBachelor’s degree required in an engineering discipline such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering. Advanced degrees are preferred.
