Title: Special Education AideSupervisor: Special Education Teacher and PrincipalStart Date: 8/10/2026Salary: CCBOE Salary ScheduleFLSA Status: Non-ExemptJob Goals:To assist the special education services teacher in providing instructional and support services for maximum student achievement.To assist teacher(s) in developing a safe, healthy learning environment.To assist teacher(s) in providing small group instruction.To encourage involvement of the families of the students in the special education program.Minimum Qualifications:High school diploma or equivalent.Associate's degree or 48 semester hours from an accredited college or a passing score on the Work Keys certification.Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and peers.Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.Knowledge of current instructional strategies to assist students.Knowledge of emergency procedures and safety rules.Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.Physical strength, emotional ability, and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced work environment.Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.Ability to follow instructions and accept constructive feedback.Ability to stand, walk, stoop, assist with student toileting and specific hygiene needs.Ability to transfer students, feed students, and provide physical intervention when required.Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities.Performs academic, physical, and/or computer tasks under the supervision of a certified teacher as assigned.Works with small groups of students to reinforce and to re-teach, when necessary, material and/or activities initially introduced by the teacher(s) as assigned.Works with individual students who need individual attention as assigned.Helps students to use books, computers, classroom materials, and other equipment.Assists in the diagnosis of student academic problems and assists teachers in remediation.Assists in the guidance of independent study, enrichment work, remedial help, and follow-up work as specified by the teacher(s).Assists teacher(s) by checking student notebooks, computer work, physical education activities, and daily written/oral assignments as directed.Assists with routine classroom clerical and housekeeping duties; assists in setting up classroom, inventory, and orders supplies as assigned.Assists with preparation of instructional aids, bulletin boards, learning displays, and learning activities.Assists with non-instructional classroom duties such as snacks, breaks, personal hygiene/clothing needs, and other duties as directed. Assists students with all aspects of toileting, which may include diapering, and lifting on and off the toilet, changing tables and mats.Assists with movement of students with special needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring and physical intervention).Assists teachers in maintaining discipline and encouraging acceptable student behavior.Assists in managing student behavior to include crisis intervention when needed, including restraining disruptive or physically dangerous students within the guidelines of Crisis Intervention and Prevention (CPI) training.Performs basic health, first aid, or basic nursing care for special education students as directed or authorized by a school nurse.Supervises a group of students in the temporary absence of the responsible teacher.Implement behavior management plan consistent with teacher implementation instructions.Attends IEP meetings, if requested.Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.Sets up and stores technological and other audio-visual equipment for classroom use as assigned.Assists in the supervision of students during lunch periods, assemblies, physical education, off-campus excursions, and testing as assigned.Participates in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings, in-service, and staff development activities as required or assigned.Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.Models and maintains high ethical standards.Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.Transfers with a student to another education setting when requested in accordance with the school system policies governing employee transfers.Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the principal.Terms of Employment/Salary: As established by the Board and applicable state law.Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.Equal Employment Opportunity:The Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE) is an equal opportunity employer.
