8th Grade Science Teacher

Position Overview:We are hiring a person to teach science to students in grade 8. This position can incorporate a degree of applicant preference, skill, and expertise, but will need to cover the following areas:Foundational science instruction for students who are continuing to build their understanding of core concepts such as physical science, life science, earth and space science, and scientific inquiry, with an emphasis on developing curiosity, observation, and analytical thinking.Mid-level units that deepen content knowledge and allow for alignment between student interest and instructor expertise, including opportunities for hands-on experimentation, lab work, and project-based learning in alignment with the broader 6-12 science vision.Potential niche or advanced units that extend learning into specialized topics, interdisciplinary connections, or high school readiness, as aligned with the needs of the TSAS curricular catalog.This is a full-time position that may only be filled by someone who comes through the interview process embodying and subscribing to values, habits, and mindsets of:Dynamic teaching in a secondary setting, preferably in a diverse public school that serves students from a variety of backgrounds and levels of available resources and abilities.Fierce dedication to working expansively as part of a team of teachers and support staff in a dynamic, kind, empathetic, professional, liberatory way.Operative knowledge of scientific concepts, methodologies, and pedagogical approaches, including inquiry-based and experiential learning.Well-researched, familiar knowledge of TSAS as a unique school with a rich legacy, strengths, assets, opportunities for growth, realistic public school challenges, and resource limitations.A true desire to see all students succeed, regardless of demographic characteristics, in a way that causes growth toward self actualization and a life of joy, choice, and advocacy.Openness to creative, often DIY means of lab development, resource acquisition, collaboration, curricular development, and problem solving.School Overview:TSAS is a free public charter school with small class sizes that prioritizes innovation and teacher autonomy. Applicants should be enthusiastic about experimentation, student-centered instruction, project-based learning, building strong relationships, and developing equitable success strategies to serve all students.Qualifications:Bachelor's degree is required, while a degree in education, science, or a related field is preferredExperience working with secondary students in an educational setting (preferred)Teaching certification or licensure is preferred but not requiredStrong knowledge of many dimensions of scientific concepts and practicesEffective communication and interpersonal skillsPassion for teaching and a commitment to student successProficiency in educational technology and digital learning toolsWorking Conditions:Teachers typically work indoors in a classroom and lab setting, with regular opportunities for hands-on experiments, demonstrations, and occasional outdoor or experiential learning activities. This role may involve standing for extended periods, facilitating lab activities, interacting with students and colleagues, and attending meetings or professional development sessions outside of regular school hours.
