Corporate Safety Director - Central Virginia
The Caton Companies, a family-owned group of individually managed companies, is comprised of Caton Construction Group, Management Services Corporation, Manufactured Housing Enterprises, Park Lane Finance, and Maple Tree Rentals. As the Safety Department is a shared service, the Corporate Safety Director will be responsible for the promotion of a positive safety culture throughout all business units as well as managing a team of dedicated Safety Professionals.
The Corporate Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all safety programs and initiatives across the organization to ensure a safe, compliant, and high-performing work environment. This role provides strategic leadership and operational support to reduce risk, prevent incidents, and promote a strong safety culture across all heavy civil construction projects, including highway, bridge, site development, and utility work.
Essential Functions
Develops and executes a comprehensive corporate safety strategy aligned with Company goals and regulatory requirements
Champions a proactive safety culture, emphasizing accountability, hazard recognition, and continuous improvement.
Key advisor to executive leadership on safety-related matters
Regularly visits worksites in Virginia and North Carolina, including heavy civil construction projects, multifamily apartment communities, and office environments
Leads the development, implementation, and promotion of policies, procedures, and best practices to encourage safe work standards and foster a safety-conscious culture among all team members.
Conduct inspections and audits, identify and report findings, and recommend corrective action
Facilitate or assist with safety training and orientations, as well as First AID/CPR training
Obtain and maintain necessary safety and health certifications, including First Aid/CPR Trainer, and 10 and 30-hour OSHA Construction Trainer
Conducts safety meetings and trains others on conducting safety meetings
Assist with the development of site-specific safety procedures
Lead efforts in root cause analysis and lessons learned
Leads review of federal, state and local inspection activity and proposed citations
Provides guidance and distribution of personal protective equipment
Respond to incidents and oversee incident reporting processes and procedures
Leads effort and assists in performing pre-employment, post-incident and random drug testing.
Travel
Regular overnight travel is required. Daily travel, job-to-job, required.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science in Safety Management or similar
3+ Years Safety experience in heavy civil construction or commercial construction, DOT experience a must
CHST (Certified Health and Safety Technician) required
Must have proficient working knowledge of construction means and methods
OSHA 30 Required
Experience in implementing safety principles in an operational environment
Preferred Education, Experience and Abilities
Bilingual (Spanish) a plus
OSHA 510, OSHA 500
First Aid/ CPR Train the Trainer
ATSSA Work Zone Trainer
