Vice President of Estimating – Sacramento, CA or Dallas, TX
Responsibilities
Leadership Responsibilities:
Work closely with preconstruction and operations to ensure competitive positioning while ensuring the team delivers accurate high‑quality cost solutions for electrical construction projects.
Oversee the estimating department, guiding the bid strategy, risk, and resource allocation to support growth and profitability.
Structure the estimating and pre‑construction department to adequately staff the estimating needs of the organization.
Create clarity of roles and responsibilities for team members and set goals with the team for project success.
Ensure project teams engage with subs and vendors timely and constructively.
Communicate subcontractor and vendor relationships with support operations and preconstruction/estimating that could affect future work or relationships.
Coach and develop team members for successful accomplishment of their own key results; create a culture of continuous improvement through learning and feedback.
Develop growth plans for team members and anticipate future staffing needs for executing projected estimating and pre‑construction needs.
Promote collaboration and innovation at all levels.
Stay informed about new code requirements, industry trends, regulations, and emerging opportunities within the electrical construction market.
Mentor future leaders and build succession pipelines within estimating and pre‑construction.
Strategic & Financial Leadership:
Own and drive the overall estimating strategy, aligning company growth targets, market positioning and long‑term business objectives.
Partner with executive leadership to forecast backlog, revenue opportunities and margin performance driven by the pre‑construction efforts.
Establish and monitor KPIs for estimating accuracy, hit‑rate margin and bid performance.
Lead go/no‑go decision‑making process for pursuit based on risk, profitability and strategic alignment.
Ensure contractual, scope and design risks are clearly defined and communicated prior to hand‑off.
Process & Operational Excellence:
Building and maintaining positive relationships with clients is the top priority; address all client inquiries, concerns and feedback in a timely manner and ensure transparency and client satisfaction throughout a project’s life cycle.
Ensure standards for estimate reviews, bid leveling, and executive approval.
Champion continuous improvement initiatives with new technology, data analytics and AI tools.
Ensure seamless project turnover from preconstruction to operations, including scope clarity and client expectations.
Serve as a key bridge between estimating, operations, business development and executive leadership.
Market & Business Development Influence:
Engage in industry associations and events to continuously identify potential subs and vendors aligned with Royal on future work.
Build relationships with clients, identify current and potential clients and implement strategies for maintaining these relationships; engage clients throughout all project phases, identifying and meeting their needs, objectives and challenges.
Build and maintain relationships with vendors and subcontractors that positively impact project procurement and collaboration through challenges.
Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential clients.
Set the tone for a high‑performance, accountable and collaborative estimating culture.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in business administration, business management, marketing, communications, construction, or a related discipline – preferred but not required.
15+ years of proven successful construction experience in both field and office (C‑Level relevant experience).
Required Skills & Abilities:
Experienced in construction management, field operations, and constructability.
Ability to build new client relationships and expand market opportunities across multiple segments.
Strong understanding of electrical systems, codes, regulations and industry standards; provides technical guidance and ensures designs comply with applicable codes and safety requirements.
Proven track record of profitable and productive construction projects managed or overseen.
Established reputation in the construction industry and ability to build trust with customers and colleagues.
Strong business acumen and understanding of industry practices, new developments and contract types.
Proficient in construction and design systems, building types and cost structures.
Deep knowledge of construction terminology and technical processes.
Understanding of differences between public and private sector pricing and installation methods.
Knowledge of competitors’ strengths and weaknesses and awareness of market sector trends.
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills.
Strong interpersonal skills with an outward mindset.
Safety & Physical Requirements

Salary
$220,000 – $270,000 per year (Exempt)
