The Company is seeking a Project Billing Accountant in the Charlotte, NC headquarters.Position SummaryThe Project Billing Accountant supports the financial management of engineering and architectural project reporting within both commercial and government-funded projects. This role is responsible for project setup, cost tracking, billing, and financial reporting while ensuring compliance with contract requirements, FAR/DFARS regulations, and internal policies. The position works closely with operations and accounting teams to ensure accurate and timely project financials.Responsibilities/DutiesSet up new projects in the accounting system, including budgets and cost structuresPrepare and process project billings, including time & materials and fixed price contractsAssist with client and government contract billing requirements and documentationTrack project costs such as labor, subcontracts, direct expenses, and overheadSupport revenue recognition and work in progress (WIP) reportingMonitor budget vs. actual performance and communicate variances to project managersAssist with indirect cost allocations and analysisSupport month end close related to project accounting with some general ledger accountingMaintain organized project and contract financial records for audit readinessQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field3 years of accounting or project accounting experienceBasic understanding of project accounting conceptsProficiency in Excel; experience with BC365 (GovCon) system is preferredStrong attention to detail and organizational skillsAbility to work collaboratively with technical and non‑financial teamsExperience in engineering, architecture, or professional services environments preferredFamiliarity with government contracting and FAR‑allowable cost principles preferredExposure to WIP, revenue recognition, and contract administration preferredAbility to independently manage multiple projects and deadlines in an evolving environmentStrong communication and problem‑solving skillsZAPATA offers a competitive benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, disability and life insurance, paid time off, holiday pay, and 401(k) participation.All employment offers are contingent upon successfully completing a criminal background check and drug screen.
