Description: A detail-oriented Scientific Data Analyst to support the curation, quality control, and standardization of oceanographic, biological, and geological datasets. This position focuses on hands-on data management tasks that ensure scientific datasets are accurate, well-organized, and prepared for analysis, archiving, and sharing.
Primary Responsibilities
Curate and organize oceanographic, biological, and geological datasets from field, laboratory, and sensor-based sources.
Convert incoming data into consistent, well-structured formats (e.g., CSV, NetCDF, Excel).
Ensure files are clearly organized, named, and documented for reuse.
Perform routine QA/QC checks to identify missing values, format inconsistencies, unit errors, and outliers.
Validate data against sampling protocols and basic scientific expectations.
Document all QA/QC steps and corrections.
Assist in preparing datasets for submission to data repositories or internal databases.
Maintain basic metadata, data dictionaries, and user documentation.
Work closely with scientists, technicians, and data managers to understand data context and collection methods.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in oceanography, marine science, biology, geology, environmental science, data science, or a related field.
2+ years of demonstrated experience working with scientific or environmental datasets
Familiarity with data QA/QC concepts and careful attention to detail.
Ability to follow established procedures and document work clearly.

Please note, this is a temporary position. The length of the assignment will be based on department need with the possibility of continuation. Temporary assignments cannot exceed 11 consecutive months without a full 31-day break from employment. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave. Temporary employees are subject to the Affordable Care Act guidelines.
