September 15, 2024 Position Announcement: Full Time Apprentice Soil Scientist at Geophyta Inc. You have a tremendous opportunity as an enthusiastic, aspiring soil scientist to practice your profession while learning from a soil scientist with 40+ years of research, consulting, and laboratory experience. Geophyta Inc., established in 1983, is requesting applications for employment with our very successful soil consulting business in north central Ohio. Job Description: You will be responsible for conducting soil investigations for on-site septic treatment suitability and collaborating with our septic system designer. You will develop precision fertilization plans for our farm clients to meet environmental nutrient management requirements. You will also be responsible for learning to manage our in-house soil nutrient analysis laboratory. Job Qualifications: You need to be a certified professional soil scientist (CPSS) or be willing to apprentice under our CPSS. If you are not a CPSS, you will be required to be on track to take the CPSS fundamentals test and have completed most soil science and general science coursework required for certification. This is a very difficult test and an arduous task to complete. Geographic information system software experience is desirable, but we are willing to train a fast learner. Job Requirement: This position requires travel within a 15-county area in north central Ohio using a company vehicle. An adventurous spirit with enjoyment of nature while working outdoors in all weather conditions is desirable. Operation of an all-terrain vehicle for site exploration adds to the excitement of this position. You must be able to lift 35 pounds of equipment. This is a physically demanding job that requires collection of soil with a powered post driver and hand jack. A farm background is desirable, but not mandatory. An effective communicator is required with the ability to transfer technical information and regulations to clients. You must be able to work alone after completion of an apprenticeship. Self-motivation will be needed to complete many tasks in a small business environment.
