Electrician - Traffic

The City of Appleton is currently accepting applications for a vacancy in Public Works. This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of the City's traffic-related electrical equipment and facilities. Work primarily involves installing, repairing, and maintaining the City's traffic signals and streetlights as well as other electrical equipment and data networking facilities within the City's public rights-of-way. Work is performed under the general supervision of the City Traffic Engineer.This is a journeyman/master electrician position with responsibility for installation, maintenance and repair of the City's traffic-related electrical equipment and facilities. The Electrician-DPW position primarily involves installing, repairing, and maintaining the City's traffic signals and streetlights and other electrical equipment and data networking facilities within the City's public rights-of-way. Work is performed under general supervision of the City Traffic Engineer.This position involves infrequent after-hours duties related to emergency calls, project installations, and contractor inspections. It does not involve on-call duties or on-call rotation. Emergency work, as well as planned work, often involves lengthy exposure to all types of weather and direct exposure to heavy traffic on local and higher-speed roadways.Hours are Monday - Friday 6:00AM - 2:00 PM.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSInstalls, repairs, and maintains traffic signals, warning lights and controlsInstalls, repairs, and maintains streetlights and controlsInstalls, repairs, and maintains the City's traffic communications network field equipmentTroubleshoots electrical problemsLocates existing underground electrical and communications facilitiesMaintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as requiredOTHER JOB FUNCTIONSWorks with Purchasing Division to order parts and suppliesAssists in development of specifications for traffic signal and street lighting equipmentInspection of contractor installations of infrastructurePerforms miscellaneous tasks as directed by supervisorExperience as an electrician and the necessary training beyond the high school level to have attained a journeyman or master electrician license, with some of that experience and training including street lighting as well as buildings; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:Considerable knowledge of electrical systems, methods, electrical codes, and regulationsAbility to learn and work with street lighting and traffic signal systemsAbility to learn and work with custom software to configure and maintain traffic signal electronicsAbility to learn and work safely in and around vehicular trafficAbility to troubleshoot traffic signal electrical and control system problemsAbility to troubleshoot street lighting electrical and control system problemsAbility to communicate effectively with other employees, contractors and the public in a courteous, positive, and tactful mannerAbility to drive large trucks and other vehicular/construction equipmentAbility to withstand an outdoor working environment during all seasonsAbility to work above ground in a bucket truckSkill in the operation of electrical test equipment and hand and power toolsKnowledge of and proficiency in Windows computer operating system and Microsoft Office programsValid CDL driver's license and good driving record, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire (City provides training if needed).Valid Wisconsin Journeyman Electrician or Master Electrician licenseCOMPETENCIESCommunicationSelf-directed/Autonomous/AccountableProblem SolvingTechnical/Professional/Strategic SkillsCreative/Innovative
